There are so many things to do in Ventura: it is the perfect base for a family adventure on California’s central coast. The vibrant downtown and harbor offers nostalgic beach-town fun, while the incredible Channel Islands National Park is a short ferry ride away. It can be tricky trying to please everybody on a family trip but this little gem is packed full of fun.

Ventura Facts

It’s located on the coast, five and a half hour’s drive from San Francisco and just over an hour from LA

The city is actually called San Buenaventura but the name was too long to print on railroad tickets, so it was shortened and stuck

Ventura is the gateway to the Channel Islands

Outdoor outfitters Patagonia has its headquarters here

Have A Beach Day

Ventura has several clean, sandy beaches where you can spend an afternoon relaxing. Our kids could not get enough of the surf, which was big enough to jump in but not so rough as to be dangerous.

Best Ventura beaches to visit with your kids:

Ventura Pier Beach is the closest to downtown. There are lifeguards in the summer and a small playground.

Marina Park Beach is near the harbor and has a pirate ship playground, although the play area was closed for repairs when we visited in July 2021.

Surfer’s Knoll is a lovely stretch by the harbor, perfect for watching the surfers do their thing. As the name implies, the water is better for surfing than swimming and there are no lifeguards.

Harbor Cove Beach is the quieter, calmer beach next to Surfer’s Knoll. Protected by jetties either side, this beach is ideal for families.

Wheel Good Fun, located by the pier, has boogie boards and other beach equipment for rent. I also have a beach packing list, which helps me to remember everything I need.

Walk The Historic Ventura Pier

Take a stroll down Ventura Pier, built in 1872. The wooden structure has been destroyed several times over the years but always carefully restored. Information boards placed along the boardwalk explain the pier’s history and importance to the city.

It’s a great spot for fishing, or just watching other people try their luck. According to a local I spoke to, thresher sharks are the goal – but occasionally they hook a great white instead!

If the fresh air has made you hungry, head back along the pier to Beach House Tacos, a local favourite.

Cycle The Coast

Wheel Fun Rentals rents bicycles at the pier, which you can rent by the day or by the hour. Ventura has a beautiful paved cycle path along the beach, the San Buenaventura Riding Trail, which takes you to the neighboring town of Carpinteria. Adventurous families can follow the river inland 17 miles to Ojai.

You can rent adult bikes, kid bikes, tag-alongs, or a Surrey for four. Helmets, bike locks and a basket to store your stuff are included in the price. If you prefer to stay at the beach, you can also rent toys, an umbrella and boogie boards here.

Thrift Shopping Downtown

Ventura’s downtown has a good mix of bars, restaurants and interesting stores. We loved hunting for treasures in the many thrift stores and antique shops. There is also a great book shop, inviting art galleries, a vintage movie theater and a travel-inspired boutique to browse.

When we visited in the summer of 2021, Ventura had pedestrianized much of the downtown area and added a stage for live music. At night, the area’s festive vibe attracted a diverse crowd. Teens practiced their Tik Tok dances, families dined out under heat lamps and surfer kids drank craft beers outside microbreweries.

I love this idea, it reminds me of towns in Spain where quiet streets come alive after dark. I hope more cities keep their main streets car-free even after the pandemic is over. You can find the pedestrianized area on E Main St, between 1st St and Palm St.

San Buenaventura Mission

Full disclosure: we skipped this one. I thought it looked really interesting but my kids are probably a little too young to appreciate historical buildings. However, older kids – especially those studying the Missions in history – would enjoy San Buenaventura Mission.

Located on E Main St, the original church was finished in 1782 and has been in almost continuous operation as a mission, school and place of worship ever since. Visitors can take a tour, check out the museum with its Native American artifacts and enjoy the beautiful gardens. Worshippers are also welcome to take part in the morning Mass.

Day Trip To The Channel Islands

If you do one thing in Ventura, make it this! Island Packers runs the ferry out to the Channel Islands, an archipelago off the coast of California famous for its plant and wildlife.

Santa Cruz is the best island for families. Visitors can do this as a day trip or an overnight camping trip. There are no cars, hotels or even food on the islands, so you have to pack everything in and out yourself.

My recommendation is to take the earliest ferry then spend the day kayaking with Channel Islands Adventure Company. If your kids are too young (kayakers must be five to ride), take a hike or just play on the beautiful beach. I have way more details on what to do on Santa Cruz Island in this post.

Arcade Games At Ventura Harbor

Harbor Village, to the south of Ventura’s downtown, has lots of fun family activities – including Ventura Village Carousel. This games arcade is a blast. We were able to get 20 tokens for $5, which worked out to be about six games. It’s a mix of video games and other entertainment, including air hockey.

Winners get tickets they can trade in for prizes and thanks to some kind teens who donated their winnings to our kids, our kids won a very annoying whistle. There is also a vintage carousel.

Eat Ice Cream Out Of A Fish

Not an actual fish, a fish-shaped waffle with a scoop of ice cream inside! Coastal Ice Cream, located at Ventura’s Harbor Village, is one of a handful of ice cream spots serving this Japanese treat. There is another in LA and San Francisco.

I apologize for not taking a photo, but I am not a multitasker and trying to hold a dripping ice cream in one hand and a camera in another was beyond my capabilities.

The menu is enormous, with 40 flavors plus toppings to choose from. The kids had soft serve, I tried a malted chocolate and my husband opted for a salted caramel. They also had some intriguing green tea and ube flavors which looked amazing.

Located in the Harbor Village, the National Park Service has a great free museum for the Channel Islands in Ventura. It’s a good place to learn about the wildlife from interactive exhibits and knowledgeable rangers.

This is where kids can pick up a Junior Ranger program to complete at the center and earn a badge. I especially enjoyed talking with the rangers, who are all so passionate about their work. Give yourself some time to walk around the native plants garden, which is full of tips on how you can grow some of these plants yourself (you can buy some here too).

Pedalo The Harbor

Explore the harbor in a pedal boat from Ventura Boat Rentals for an hour of fun. The protected harbor is the ideal place to do this as there are no waves or ocean currents. You can also get closer to the sea lions, who love to sunbathe on the docks.

Stand up paddle boards and kayaks are also available to rent.

Where To Eat In Ventura

Thanks to some recommendations from a local, we had some wonderful meals in Ventura. All of the following are family-friendly.

Lure is a seafood restaurant in downtown selling both the local catch and seafood from across the world. The food and service is high-end but the atmosphere is relaxed, perfect for a beach town. It’s popular, so turn up early to get your name on the list. A kid’s menu is available.

Finney’s Crafthouse serves craft beer and food. The flatbread pizzas were delicious and we all enjoyed dining outdoors under the heat lamps (dress warmly, the sea breeze is bracing). Great selection of beer and as we were within a ten-minute walk, we could both enjoy a drink.

Rincon Brewery is another kid-friendly brew pub in downtown, serving excellent craft beer alongside food like burgers, tacos and fresh salads.

Fluid State has a lively pub garden, tasty beer and sourdough pizza: it’s a winning combo.

For fish tacos, check out Beach House Tacos on the pier or our favorite, Spencer Mackenzie’s. The hot sauces are amazing.

If you still have the room after all that, Ventura has a Ben & Jerry’s.

Where To Stay In Ventura

We stayed in a cute two-bedroom Airbnb apartment ten minute’s walk from downtown. It was great value, conveniently located, clean and the host was responsive.

As we had an early start, we wanted to be closer to the harbor for the night before our trip to Santa Cruz. There are several hotels in the area: we stayed in the Sheraton Four Points. Our room was pretty spacious, the beds were comfy and it was a quick five-minute drive to the ferry.

If you prefer to stay in a hotel near downtown and the beach, the Marriott Ventura Beach is ideally located on Sanbuenaventura State Beach. It has a pool, a good restaurant and beautiful views.

Getting Around Ventura

Ventura is a very walkable city. If you stay near downtown, you can easily walk to the pier and the beach. The harbor is a ten minute drive but there is a free tourist bus running between Thursday and Sunday, departing from the visitor center.

The Pacific Surfliner runs right through the town, making a stop at Ventura Station. If your kids are fascinated by trains, this is a really nice alternative to a road trip.

If you are driving, there is plenty of free parking all around the city, especially at the harbor.

And that’s it! Everything you need to know to stay and play in Ventura. Let me know in the comments if you are planning a trip!

A day at the beach is the perfect toddler trip: soft sand to explore, cool water to tickle little feet and plenty of space to run around. With a little bit of planning, you will have all the toddler beach essentials you need for a memorable family day at the beach.

Toddler Beach Essentials Checklist

Toddler Sun Protection

Sun protection is absolutely vital and multiple “layers” of protection will keep your toddler safe from sunburn. Choose a SPF50 rash vest and sun hat, use SPF50 sunscreen, then bring your own shade in the form of a beach tent or umbrella.

UV Skinz is my favorite brand for sun-safe swimwear. The three-piece sets are great value and feature cute designs. The company was founded by a mom of three who set out to design affordable, durable sun-safe swim-wear after her husband sadly lost his battle with skin cancer.

Next, choose a good sunscreen. There is a lot of choice out there so I’ll help you narrow it down a bit!

Sunscreen comes in two varieties: “physical” and “chemical”. Both are fine for kids. A “physical” sunscreen primarily uses titanium oxide or zinc oxide (found in baby rash creams) as its active ingredient. It sits on top of the skin and blocks the harmful UVAs and UVBs from entering the sun.

This type is good for very sensitive skins and is reef-safe. The downside is they can need more frequent applications and can leave a white tint to your skin – not ideal for darker complexions.

Blue Lizard makes a great SPF 50 zinc oxide sunscreen, which is safe even for sensitive skins. It is designed for up to 80 minutes in the water before a re-application is needed.

Sun Bum is another of my favourites, it is a “chemical” sunscreen but is reef-friendly and also good for sensitive skin. It also smells amazing and is very moisturizing. I have this on Amazon’s Subscribe and Save over the summer so I never run out.

Sunscreen should always be reapplied every two hours, unless you go in the water, in which case reapply when you get out. Set an alarm on your phone to help you remember!

Beach Shade

Next, bring your own shade. A beach umbrella with a sand anchor won’t blow away – we use this Tommy Bahama shade, which has stood up to windy weather and hasn’t faded in the sun.

This little pop-up sun shelter would also work well and is a perfect spot for a nap. The mesh liner will keep out bugs, while the fabric of the tent protects your baby from the sun. It’s not big enough for the whole family, however – check out this larger tent if you all want to stay comfortably in the shade.

Toddler Safe Swimming

For water fun, don’t forget to pack a swim diaper. The iPlay brand works well and is reusable. Pack two to be on the safe side!

A toddler life jacket is the safest way to swim. It will keep kids upright in the water and if they do accidentally fall in, flips them onto their back. Make sure you buy a US Coast Guard approved style such as Stearn’s Puddle Jumpers.

Water shoes are another toddler beach essential to keep feet comfortable on hot sand or rocks.

Snacks and Drinks

Bring plenty of water to the beach, in a soft cool bag to keep everything cold.

Toddler Beach Toys

The beach is just a giant sand box, so bring a bucket and spade or a truck to keep your toddler entertained. Green Toys make the best plastic toys, all from recycled material.

So you have your sun protection, your snacks and your toys… how are you going to get all your toddler beach essentials from the car to the sand?

You could lug it all in a backpack (the umbrella bag has a carry strap, which helps) or invest in a collapsible wagon.

Whatever you use, bring an extra bag for all the wet and sandy things, to keep separate from your clean-ish stuff.

Lake Tahoe is beloved by Californians, who return year after year to spend lazy summer days splashing in the clear waters and hiking through fragrant pine forests.

It’s perfect for outdoorsy families who like to be on the water, especially for those with small children who might find the Northern Californian surf too strong (and shark-filled) for paddling.

Lake Tahoe is a year-round destination. The ski resorts are buzzing in the winter and early spring, while hiking and boating is popular in the summer and fall. I have focused on summer activities for this post.

What part of Lake Tahoe is best for families?

On the Californian side, the areas are roughly split into South, West and North. There is really no area that isn’t suitable for families.

I like the West Lake area: being in the middle, it is a short drive to anywhere and Tahoe City has a laid-back vibe with plenty of great places to eat.

Sunnyside Resort and Lodge is a great place to stay, and the lakeside restaurant is a locals’ favorite.

VRBO is another great place to find accommodation, as you can often find an entire home for the price of a hotel room. This Tahoe City cabin has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a real log fire and access to a private beach for an average of $200 a night.

If you want to stay close to some of the more famous beauty spots, South Lake is a better base but it is also a little busier with casinos and bars.

Check out The Landing Resort and Spa or Edgewood for a luxurious stay in a very convenient lakeside location.

North Lake Tahoe has some of the best beaches, with wide, sandy shores and stunning views over the lake. It is also fairly quiet.

The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino is ideal for families staying in this area. It has two heated outdoor pools, fire pits for roasting marshmallows and a private beach.

A short drive inland from the lake is Truckee, a vibrant mountain town with great restaurants and shops. Truckee is the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for a slightly less “touristy” Tahoe experience.

Although you won’t be right on the lake, this cute cabin near Truckee’s downtown is steps from the river.

What is there to do in Lake Tahoe for families?

Lake Tahoe is all about the outdoors: hiking, swimming, boating, cycling and after all that, enjoying a well-earned sunset cocktail on a restaurant deck.

I highly recommend spending half a day navigating the Truckee River on a raft: drifting down the river is the perfect way to stay cool on a hot day and there are a few rapids to keep things interesting.

Rent a raft from Truckee River Rafting, including life jackets and a ride back to Tahoe City, for a three-hour trip along the river. Under fives are free but under two-year-olds are too young for this activity.

Watch out for the geese – one of them bit our daughter!

For adventurous kids aged five and up, check out Tahoe Treetops Adventure Park, an outdoor ropes course where you can climb, swing and zipline your way through the forest. There are challenging courses for adults and easier ones for the whole family.

A fun lake activity is to hike down to Emerald Bay, rent a kayak and paddle out to Fannette Island not far from shore. Children can kayak but they must be over the age of three. More details on this hike are below.

Best Lake Tahoe hikes for families

Emerald Bay Sate Park

Stroller friendly: Yes, with a sturdy model
Distance: Two miles there and back
Trail start: Vikingsholm car park

Emerald Bay State Park, 12 miles north of South Lake Tahoe, is reached from the Vikingsholm car park ($10 parking fee) by a winding downhill trail. Once you are by the lake, you can explore Vikingsholm, an intriguing Scandinavian-inspired mansion, take a kayak to Fannette Island, or simply relax on the sandy beach.

One drawback to this area: it is very crowded. You will not get a car parking spot after 9 am during the summer. There is road parking but this too will be full after 10 am.

For families with small children, the one-mile hike to the beach is enough, especially if you are lugging all your swimming gear. The trail is wide and the incline is not too steep, so a rugged stroller is possible. A comfortable carrier might be easier, however, especially for the uphill return trip.

If your kids can handle a few miles of walking, the lakeside trail is flat and shady, perfect for all ages.

From Vikingsholm, follow the signs to Lower Eagle Falls, an easy trek through the forest to a waterfall. The trail continues, offering beautiful lake views as a reward.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds, pick up the Rubicon Trail from the beach and head away from Vikingsholm. Keep an eye out for the majestic Bald Eagles that circle overhead and make their nests in the pines.

Cascade Falls

Stroller friendly: No
Distance: Three miles
Trail start: Bayview campsite

Another great hike in this area can be found across the road from the Vikingsholm car park, at the Bayview camping ground, to Cascade Falls. Park at the entrance and trek through the campsite to the far side, where you will head over a ridge and immediately want to get out your camera for the view of the lake.

This out-and-back hike is rocky and narrow at times, so make sure you all have good shoes. Our kids managed this at four and six but I think it would have been do-able with a carrier for younger children.

The trail heads away from the lake up towards Cascade Falls, where the path opens up to a granite plateau. Take a picnic and check out the creek, where you can paddle in the shallow water.

Keep a close eye on the kids, as there are no barriers at any point. Stick to the lakeside trails if you are anxious about your kids’ safety on what is a fairly rugged mountain hike.

Dolder Nature Trail

Stroller friendly: Partially (to the beach)
Distance: 1.5 mile loop
Trail start: Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park

My other favorite family hike is in Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park. The large parking lot offers plenty of spaces, so there is no need to turn up early. The Dolder Nature Trail is a 1.5 mile loop that starts out paved and becomes sandy as you go deeper into the forest.

It is an easy, flat trail that begins and ends at the sandy beach, where you can take a cool dip after your walk. As you meander through the Sugar Pines that are the park’s namesake, look out for the logs and branches neatly piled – they are part of the controlled burns that take place here in an effort to mitigate the region’s devastating wildfires.

The park also holds Junior Ranger events here in the summer, so kids should look out for an opportunity to earn themselves a badge.

Balancing Rock Nature Trail

Stroller friendly: No
Distance: 0.5 mile loop
Trail start: D.L Bliss State Park

This is a sweet trail for kids, with a surprise at the end! Take the easy, half-mile loop located in D.L Bliss State Park, between South and West Lake Tahoe. There is some uphill and the trail is rocky, but it is not long and should be do-able with toddlers.

Round a corner and there it is – a cool geological phenomenon, or a dinosaur, depending on how you look at it. You can combine this walk with a trip to the beach, which is located at the bottom of the hill, through the campsite. There is parking at the end but I suggest you get there early in the summer (like 9 a.m. early) as there are limited spaces.

How to get to Lake Tahoe

From San Francisco International Airport, the drive is 200 miles, or around three hours and 20 minutes. If you can fly into Sacramento International Airport, the journey is more like two hours by car.

California’s Redwood trees are world-famous for being the longest-living and tallest in the world. Unique to Northern California and southern Oregon’s coast, these ancient giants are a must-see for families visiting this region.

Fortunately, there are plenty of fun, family-friendly ways to enjoy the Redwoods, whether hiking in, riding over, driving under – or even taking a steam train.

Why visit the Redwoods?

Redwood forests are nature’s cathedrals. On entering, slow down and appreciate the silence, the cool air and the dimmed light. It is somewhere you can take a deep breath of clean air, relax and just be in the moment.

And if you think all this will be lost on your kids, there are always fallen trees to climb, hollowed trees to climb into and wildlife you won’t get anywhere else in the world: ever seen a bright yellow banana slug on a walk through the woods?

The Redwoods are easily accessible from San Francisco and the Bay Area. Or keep going and make them the focus of a road trip up the Northern California coast.

Check out this post from Road Tripping California for some California road trips inspiration.

The Santa Cruz Mountains did not have the shiny stuff but there was a still a kind of gold rush here. San Francisco needed lumber to build a city and the Coastal Redwoods were perfect – strong, insect and fire-proof – so they were felled in their thousands.

Roaring Camp was the railroad set up to transport the lumber down to Santa Cruz where it could be shipped out. Fortunately for us, Henry Cowell, who became rich from the trade, was persuaded by conservationists to buy and preserve the area before it was completely deforested.

The steam train that used to haul lumber is now used to haul tourists. Take the train all the way to Santa Cruz or do the Redwood loop and chug lazily through the forest. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the history and ecology of this special area.

In the summer, Thomas the Tank comes to visit and at Christmas you can ride the holiday train. Check the website for special events throughout the year.

After the train ride, take the stroller-friendly Redwood loop trail in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park where you will find several trees you can explore, inside and out! The best is the Fremont Tree, an enormous Redwood with a hollow so large the whole family can stand up inside.

Food is available at the onsite cafe and there is a small store selling snacks and souvenirs.

How to get to Roaring Camp Railroads

Roaring Camp Railroad is easily accessible by car from Highway 17, a two-lane mountain road that connects Santa Cruz with Silicon Valley. Take it easy on this road, it is notorious among locals for accidents when drivers take the sharp bends too fast. Stick to posted speed limits and stay alert!

Before leaving, check out nearby Ben Lomond, a charming mountain town. Grab a picnic at the market or stay for lunch at local gem, Italian restaurant Casa Nostra.

Named for naturalist John Muir, the Muir Woods National Monument is the closest Redwood forest to San Francisco, just across the Golden Gate Bridge. The main trail is a boardwalk, perfect for strollers. Families can walk the half-mile loop or the longer hour-long loop through the forest. Both trails start from the visitor center. For families with older kids (or back-carriers), the visitor center can point you in the direction of longer dirt trails.

Before heading off on a a trail, go to the Visitor Center and ask for an activity book if you have a six-year-old or older, so your children can be sworn in as a Junior Ranger. It’s a fun way to learn about the forest and there is a badge as a reward.

Muir Woods is special because there are some old-growth trees here: pre-gold rush, the Pacific coast was home to over two million acres of Redwood forest, which can live for up to 2,500 years. Once gold fever hit in the 1850s, almost all of it – 95%! – was cut down for lumber. Due to its inaccessibility, this area remained relatively unscathed. So unless you go into a basement of a San Franciscan Victorian, you need to go here to see trees older than 150 years old in the San Francisco area.

How to get to Muir Woods

You can either park at the Muir Woods car park with a ticket reserved in advance (you will be turned away if you don’t have one and don’t rely on ordering one on your phone at the car park, there is no cell coverage!) or park offsite and use a shuttle.

If you want to buy a parking ticket, make your reservation here and make sure you arrive during your reservation window. Once you park, you can stay until closing.

There are three park and ride sites, one in Mill Valley and two in Sausalito. If you are using public transport in San Francisco, it is very easy to take a ferry from the Ferry Building over to Sausalito.

San Francisco looks great from the water and you will see Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge on the ride over. If you are feeling active, combine Muir Woods with cycling over the bridge!

If you are staying in the city, check out my post on things to do in San Francisco with kids.

Redwoods Empire

If you drive north out of San Francisco and keep going up the California coast, you will find yourself in the Redwood Empire, a mysterious land of fog and giant trees. The Redwood Empire is made up of several state and national parks along Highway 101, and this is where you will find the oldest and biggest trees.

It feels almost prehistoric up here and it’s easy to imagine you have slipped back in time as you drive by dripping ferns, shafts of sunlight piercing the dense canopy to illuminate the shifting fog.

Around Klamath, just across the border from Oregon, is the unique Trees of Mystery, a kind of Redwoods theme park. The admission fee gets you an interpretive trail with some good information about the trees and interesting sculptures, but the highlight is the gondola ride. After staring up at these trees, it’s good to get a different perspective and truly appreciate just how tall they are as you glide quietly above the forest.

There are three trails, with the longest at one mile, so all easy to walk with young children. It’s a good place to learn about the trees and also Paul Bunyan, the legendary logger who stands 49 feet tall outside the entrance.

Avenue of the Giants

Humboldt Redwood State Park has the largest old-growth Redwoods forest in the world and you can see beautiful and unique trees here. Drive through via the Avenue of the Giants, a scenic 31-mile stretch of road parallel to the 101 freeway.

There are lots of good places to stop and admire the trees. Founders Grove is a great spot as you can check out the Dyerville Giant – an enormous fallen tree. Seeing a Redwood from this perspective really brings home just how big they are!

The Eternal Treehouse is another good spot for kids. There is a cafe and gift shop, as well as the treehouse itself, which is a hollowed out tree with a door, and totally somewhere fairies could live.

If you want to sleep among the Redwoods there are 250 campsites in the park. We preferred to sleep indoors and stayed at the cozy (and affordable) Miranda Gardens Resort in Myers Flat.

Drive-through trees

There are three drive-through trees in Northern California: Chandelier Tree in Mendocino County, Shrine Tree in Humboldt County and Klamath Tree in Del Norte. If you want to combine a visit to the Avenue of the Giants, Trees of Mystery and a drive-through tree, Shrine is the closest.

Drive through carefully – there is not a lot of room – and have someone walk in front to take your pictures. Be aware, larger cars may not fit. Our crossover SUV made it and so did our other group’s car, an Infiniti. As long as your car can fit into a compact space you should be fine. Entrance fee is around $8.

If you are based in San Francisco, Chandelier Tree is slightly closer at 3.5 hours driving time. All three trees are privately owned and charge an entrance fee.

Whatever your travel plans for Northern California, make sure you include a trip to the Redwoods in your itinerary – they are not to be missed!

Planning a family vacation to Yosemite National Park this summer? Don’t forget any of the essentials, it’s a long drive to the nearest town! Here is my packing list I use when planning an outdoors family vacation.

This post contains affiliate links to Amazon. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. I only recommend products I have personally used, or from brands in which I have confidence.

Day pack

A good day pack should be light weight, sturdy, comfortable and feature plenty of pockets. Bonus points if it is waterproof!

I love Osprey as a brand because although their packs are expensive, they come with a a lifetime guarantee – Osprey will repair or replace your back pack free of charge, whether you bought it 20 years ago or yesterday. It’s a “buy once and done” philosophy I am on board with. The Osprey Daylite is my pick for short family hikes as it is small, lightweight and simple.

Hiking shoes

Depending on the age of your kids, you may only be attempting easy paths. But even on the simple trails, you might have to cross a small stream or climb over some rocks. You will need a sturdy, comfortable – and preferably waterproof – pair of shoes for everyone as sore feet will quickly spoil your trip.

Sports Basement or REI are great stores for outdoor equipment. As for brands, Keen is my favorite for the whole family. Their toddler shoes are very flexible and still look good after a year of continuous wear.

Water bottles

I have tried a lot of different bottles for my kids but I always go back to Green Sprouts. These bottles have been through the dishwasher hundreds of times and still don’t leak. The weakest point is the silicone straw but you can get a replacement pack for when they break (especially if you have a chewer).

For the adults, something that will keep your drink cool (or hot) is a bonus, and of course, should not leak all over your pack. YETI will keep your drinks cold (or hot) and stylish.

Snacks

Trail mix is good for a pick-me-up, as are cereal bars.

Waterproof jacket

The weather can change quickly and it is always good to be prepared. A light-weight waterproof can be layered for cooler weather or thrown on in the event of a sudden spring downpour. Columbia is a good, affordable brand, I especially like their Pardon My Trench coat, which looks as good in the big city as the great outdoors. Check out Columbia’s cute kid’s jacket and their men’s waterproof to outfit the whole family.

Baby carrier

If your child is three or under, you will find they get tired quickly on a hike and want to be carried. A back carrier or a stroller is essential for a National Park vacation with toddlers or babies. While you can find trails suitable for a stroller, it is a good idea to have a carrier so you are not limited to where you can explore.

For babies, I prefer a stretchy wrap, as I found these type more comfortable. Boba is the original and has thousands of great reviews on Amazon. For toddlers, a back carrier is the way to go. I still use a soft structured carrier like the LILLEBaby (actually it is a Connecta, which I love, if you’re reading this in the UK check them out!) but if you plan on doing a LOT of toddler carrying, you may be better investing in a frame carrier.

I have never actually tested any out so can’t recommend any personally – I will defer to Wirecutter who have a very thorough review.

Hats

It is essential to protect yourself from the sun. For kids I really like hats with chin straps like this one from iPlay. All my friends have this brand sun hat, we love them! For the adults, a wide-brimmed hat that can be crushed down for packing like this one from Siggi is perfect (and affordable).

Sunscreen

Kids often have sensitive skin and I have found mine do react to many brands. Banana Boat Kids Factor 50 spray is light, easily absorbed and has caused us no problems so we use this for the whole family when outdoors.

It’s also reef safe so you can take it to the beach as well as Yosemite.

Bug spray

I have always had the best results from bug sprays containing DEET, which is safe to use on children over two months old. Natural alternatives containing essential oils such as citronella are available but won’t be as effective.

I didn’t find mosquitoes too much of a problem during the day in Yosemite but if you are camping or planning to be outside at dusk it would be a good idea to have some on you.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has the following recommendations for parents using insect repellants on children:

Do not buy “two-in-one” repellant and sunscreen because sunscreen needs to be applied more frequently than repellant

Do not use products with oil of lemon eucalyptus (p-menthane-3,8-diol, or PMD) on under three-year-olds as it can irritate their eyes. Not to be confused with lemon eucalyptus oil, which is safer for children but not as effective

Do not use repellant under clothes, use on bare skin only

Do not spray onto the face directly, spray on your hands then apply to the face

Avoid multiple applications

Once indoors, wash it off with soap and water

It’s your call on whether to use a product with DEET or a spray with essential oils. While DEET has been used for years and has been proven to be safe and effective, it does smell pretty awful and there is a chance your child’s skin might have a reaction. I do use it at times when bugs are really a problem and anywhere ticks might be active. Make sure you read the ingredients of whatever you buy – for kids aged under 10, buy something with a 10% concentration of DEET.

I have a spray but it does get everywhere – wipes might be a better buy for children. If you use a spray, stand away from your kids and spray it into your hand, then rub it onto their exposed skin.

These wipes from Cutter are family-safe at 7% and if you prefer a natural alternative, try this Babyganics repellant instead.

First Aid kit

Kids inevitably get grazes, bruises and splinters when playing outdoors so have a simple first aid kit with you. I always take some antiseptic ointment, band aids, a cold pack, children’s Tylenol, children’s anti-histamines (plus adult versions) and tweezers in mine, which seems to cover most emergencies.

Camera

Smartphones take beautiful pictures now and I do use mine a lot! If you want to up your game though, I do think a DSLR is worth the cost and effort. The new generation of mirrorless cameras are a lot lighter if weight is off-putting and you don’t actually need a lot of extra equipment to take great photos – for example, I hardly ever use my tripod but with the in-built anti-vibration technology I can still take non-blurry photos with long exposure times.

Sony and Olympus make outstanding mirrorless cameras, so check out the Sony Alpha a6000 and the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mk II if you are looking for a sturdy, light-weight camera to capture those amazing views.

If you prefer to stick to the smartphone, invest in a selfie stick or tripod for group pictures and a set of lenses from Olloclip or Moment.

Pocket microscope

There are a lot of interesting things to pick up and look at out on a trail, so take this small but powerful LED microscope with you to get a closer look at the flowers, rocks and bugs you find. It’s also helpful if your child is keeping a travel journal and wants to draw pictures of the things they see on their trip.

National Park Annual Pass

You can buy your pass as you drive through the gates but if you want to buy in advance, you can order one online. Even if you don’t buy one in advance, it’s a good idea to check the different prices, options and discounts available so you can move through the entrance a bit quicker.

What to read

Anything by John Muir, of course! I really enjoyed “Anywhere that is wild” the naturalist’s account of his walk from San Francisco to Yosemite. His unapologetic enthusiasm for the natural beauty of California is inspiring and it is fun to follow in his footsteps, even if it is by car.

“Look, gold!”

I looked a bit closer at the stream we had just crossed and I could see it too – gold flakes sparkling among the rocks in the cold, clear water. Since pre-school had introduced the idea of leprechauns, my five-year-old has been pretty obsessed by the idea of finding treasure and he was overjoyed to actually find some, despite me trying to convince him that the real treasure is the natural beauty of Yosemite National Park.

This was the third trip to Yosemite for my husband and I, but our first taking our two children, who are three and five years old. We had also teamed up with our friends, who have three children, an almost two, almost three and a six year old.

I was keen to show my friends Yosemite because it is such a special place: not just because of the iconic Half Dome, or the spectacular waterfalls, but because of its history. Yosemite was the first land set aside for the public by the federal government, not quite the first National Park (Yellowstone) but certainly the precedent for the creation of this beloved American institution.

Yosemite can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities and makes an excellent multi-generational vacation destination. There are plenty of stroller-friendly trails in Yosemite for parents with babies and toddlers.

And no need for camping, if that’s not your thing – we stayed in a very comfortable Airbnb, right in the park itself.

2021 UPDATE: Reservations are required throughout the summer – book your pass here. To make sure you get your preferred date, log onto the reservations website seven days before your planned trip, at 8 a.m. sharp. It’s tricky to get a good phone signal in the park, so download, screenshot or print out your reservation QR code.

Shuttles are cancelled for the 2021 season, so the only way to get around is by car. Be aware that the car parks for popular trailheads will fill up quickly.

Stroller-friendly trails in Yosemite Valley

Although Yosemite National Park covers over 1,168 square miles, most of the four million annual visitors stay within the seven square miles of Yosemite Valley. This is where you will find the most famous waterfalls, including Bridalveil and Yosemite Falls, as well as views of Half Dome and El Capitan. It’s also where you will find the restaurants, bars, shops and accommodation.

Obviously this area will get busy during the summer months but if you have small children who need to be carried or pushed, this is the place to go for toddler-approved hikes.

Although these are all easy trails, there are still a few things you can do to make sure everyone stays safe. Check out these hiking safety tips from an outdoor family adventure expert.

Stroller friendly: Yes, paved

Distance: 0.5 mile round trip

Trail start: Bridalveil Fall Parking Area

Bridalveil is the waterfall you will see after you have been through the tunnel (and stopped to check out the incredible view). In the spring and early summer, the water thunders down to the valley below, reducing to a gentler flow during the fall and winter. Starting from the parking lot, the trail takes you past giant granite boulders and pine forest to the base of the waterfall, where you can enjoy the breeze from the force of the rushing water.

If the lot is full, you can drive on and park on the road as there is another trail a little further along. This trail is unpaved, so not great for strollers, but still fairly easy. We carried our toddlers some of the way.

Distance: 1 mile

Stroller friendly: Yes, paved

Trail start: Lower Yosemite Fall Trailhead, at Yosemite Village and either walk or take the shuttle to the trailhead

Yosemite Falls is North America’s tallest waterfall at 2,425 feet from the valley floor. The falls are at their peak in May or June but are beautiful any time of year. Three separate cascades make up the falls: upper, middle and lower (not very imaginative but certainly accurate names).

The hike to the lower falls is entirely stroller friendly, easy and fun. The route takes you through the shady and fragrant pine forest, past the base of the falls, over a bridge and back, following a stream. There is a restroom shortly after the start of the trail. Our big kids loved clambering over the rocks and fallen trees, while the toddlers alternated galloping after their siblings and crashing back down in the stroller for a recharge.

As we were there in April, we were even able to have a small snowball fight as there was still snow on the ground by the stream, despite the warm weather.

This was probably my favorite hike, as it was the perfect length and the falls are an exhilarating reward for tired little legs (mine, the kids were fine).

Stroller friendly: Yes, paved

Distance: 2 miles

Trail start: Mirror Lake Trailhead, shuttle stop #17. Park at Half Dome Village and take the shuttle

This hike is longer than the others but Mirror Lake is a beautiful destination. In the summer, you will find a meadow fringed with trees, while winter and spring conjures up a lake with a little beach. If you can get your timing right, you will find the waters so still and smooth they reflect the surrounding mountains and trees perfectly and you will see why it was named Mirror Lake. I’ve never managed this but always found the place magical anyway.

All children enjoyed playing on the beach and the walk through the forest, which was full of entertaining sticks.

Cook’s Meadow Loop

Distance: 1 mile

Stroller friendly: Yes

Trail start: Yosemite Valley Visitor Center

Cook’s Meadow is especially nice in the late summer and fall, when the oaks and elms change colors and wild flowers are abundant. The hike is flat and easy, across a boardwalk, and offers stunning views of Half Dome from Sentinel Bridge. As many of the trails in Yosemite are through shady forests, this is a nice sunny contrast.

Just inside the entrance of the park is Mariposa Grove, where you can visit Yosemite’s Giant Sequoias. Park at the Welcome Plaza and take the free shuttle up to the Grove. When we went in April, parking at the 300-spot lot was not a problem but if you are visiting in the summer be sure to arrive early.

Big Trees Loop Trail

Distance: 0.3 miles

Stroller friendly: Yes

Trail start: The boardwalk at Mariposa Grove Arrival Area

With plenty of panels highlighting the history and ecology of the area, this is a nice flat trail perfect for strollers. The eco-friendly boards are new, following a three-year project to excavate the paved roads that were damaging the fragile habitat.

Having said that, there was still deep snow covering the boards when we visited in April, which made this section impassable for anything with wheels!

There is plenty to see, and if you have not seen California’s Redwoods yet, I highly recommend spending some time here. They really are fascinating and almost otherworldly, a gateway into the ancient past. This trail takes you to some beautiful tall trees, both standing and fallen.

We started on this trail but decided to carry onto the Grizzly Giant Loop Trail, which is two miles and not at all stroller-friendly. If you have a baby carrier (or don’t mind carrying your child) this is a worthwhile hike, which includes the Grizzly Giant and the Tunnel Tree.

Our favorite section was the stream crossing, where we spotted the gold! Once we were over the water, the entire downhill track sparkled in the sunshine with flecks of gold and made this walk a little bit magical.

Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Pass

Take the Tioga Pass (closed in winter: check conditions before attempting) and explore the eastern areas of Yosemite. Tuolumne Meadows is approximately one and a half hour’s drive from the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center but a world away from the crowds. This is the site that captured John Muir’s heart and led to his campaign to create a national park.

Distance: 1.5 miles

Stroller-friendly: Yes

Trail Start: Lembert Dome parking area

This is an easy, two-mile loop along a mostly-flat trail. There is a lot of wildlife hanging out along the trail; look out for deer and ground squirrels as you go. The path leads to an odd-looking stream – peer in and you will notice the water is bubbling! The springs are naturally carbonated.

Continue to Parson’s Memorial Lodge, which is sometimes open for exhibitions (it was closed when we visited) then head down to the beautiful Tuolumne River, where you can enjoy splashing about in the cool, clear waters.

Cross the wooden bridge to carry onto the visitor center, or head back along the trail to car park.

Distance: 0.3 miles

Stroller-friendly: Yes

Trail Start: Tenaya Lake Picnic Area

Grab your swimming gear, take the interpretive boardwalk down to the beach and kick off your shoes. This beautiful alpine lake is cool and clear, perfect for wading, swimming or even kayaking. There are pines for shade on the sandy shore. If you want a longer walk, continue down the beach to follow the trail around the lake.

Accommodation

There are plenty of family-friendly accommodations available for Yosemite but book early as the Park is popular, especially in the summer. It is tricky to balance convenience with price, as the best location is in the heart of Yosemite Valley but this is also the most expensive (and books up quickly).

However, there are lodges outside the park that come highly recommended, that will take you 45 minutes to an hour to get to Yosemite Village.

Tenaya Lodge is a family-friendly luxury resort just outside Yosemite. For the adventurous, there is a climbing wall, archery and horse riding available, while those looking for relaxation can head over to the spa. Child care is also available.

Rush Creek Lodge has an outdoor pool, a playground for kids and a games room. Rooms are bright and spacious, perfect for families.

Cabins at Yosemite to rent

Wawona is a village inside the park and has a few cabins available to rent. I like staying in a self-contained home when traveling as I am never worried about disturbing other guests, and as we can cook for ourselves we save money on food too.

We stayed here and had a great time but there are many beautiful cabins to choose from.

We have never stayed at The Majestic Yosemite Hotel but I would love to – the interior inspired some of the sets for The Shining and notable guests have included Queen Elizabeth II and Barack Obama. Pricey but historical and no doubt very luxurious.

At the other end of the scale, we did once stay in Housekeeping Camp, in little canvas ‘cabins’ which had beds but not much else. It’s a good way to camp without having to bring any equipment as you can rent blankets, chairs etc.

I highly recommend bringing your own sleeping bags however, as even in summer it gets very cold at night and the rented blankets did not cut it! Yosemite Valley Lodge is a good middle-ground option for families who want to stay right in the park for a reasonable price.

Food

If you are planning to cook for yourself, bring as much as you can with you as there is only one grocery store in the park. Dining is limited and casual but good. We enjoyed the pizza patio at Half Dome Village and the Village Grill Deck at Yosemite Village. Degnan’s Kitchen offers a bit more variety but if you really want to swap your hiking pants for fancy pants, make a reservation at the Majestic.

What to take to Yosemite

I couldn’t include everything here so I have made a packing list for Yosemite with all my favorite family hiking gear.

Otherwise, make sure you check the weather before you go. Temperatures vary significantly from the daytime to night and it can get pretty chilly in the evenings. Everyone will need sturdy shoes, a light waterproof and warm layers even in the summer.

Sunscreen and insect repellant is also recommended although I have never been overly bothered by bugs in Yosemite. Take a water bottle each and snacks like trail mix. Don’t forget a camera, you will want to use it a lot!

Any stroller will work, the trails I describe here are all paved so no need for an “off-roader”. For a bit more flexibility, I would also recommend a baby carrier.

Happy hiking!

If you’re looking for an affordable family getaway, Oregon is the perfect destination. With pristine forests, lakes, mountains and beaches, there are plenty of things to do for outdoor-loving families, but with fewer crowds – and more bang for your buck – than in neighboring California.

I have planned out an Oregon summer family road trip for a week, hitting some of the best spots in Oregon. If this seems like too much driving for your family, skip Crater Lake and split your time equally between Bend and Portland, or spend a couple of nights at a seaside resort instead.

Portland has a reputation for hipsters with its cafes, microbreweries and independent shops, but it is also home to many unique family-friendly experiences.

Portland’s 400-acre Washington Park alone has a Children’s Museum, a zoo, the World Forestry Center, an amazing playground, a steam train and a Japanese Garden. In the summer, concerts are held at the zoo, starting at 7pm.

Parents will also be pleased to hear that Portland’s famous breweries are welcoming to children, so no need to miss out on the northwest pacific beer scene. Portland is also known for its food carts, which are a family-friendly and affordable way to enjoy the best of the region’s food.

If your kids love public transport, Portland has a great little self-guided city tour called the 4T, a 4.5-mile urban loop that includes trails, a trolley, an aerial tram and a train!

Using one of your day’s at Portland, drive to the coast and explore Oregon’s beaches. Cannon Beach is Hollywood’s go-to filming location for wild and windswept beach scenes. The Goonies is probably the most famous but Cannon Beach also featured in Twilight and Point Break, doubling for Washington’s coastline and Bell’s Beach respectively.

Oregon has many miles of accessible, beautiful and peaceful beaches to choose from. Although the cold, often rough Pacific Ocean is better left to the surfers, there are tide pools to explore, drift wood and shells to collect, and sand castles to build here.

Other family favorite beaches include:

Devil’s Punchbowl, which features a hollow rock formation where the ocean waters spectacularly churn.

Rockaway Beach, where you can enjoy long stretches of soft sand, as well as take a trip on a steam train in nearby Tillamook.

Seaside, in addition to having a lovely beach, has an amusement park, aquarium, bowling alley and skate park. It’s also home to Fort Clatsop, where Lewis and Clark camped out over winter.

Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the US, formed by a volcanic eruption 7,700 years ago. I took my family here based on pictures of the stunning blue lake but this National Park has a lot more to offer than a great family selfie. My favorite hike was the Castle Crest Wildflower Trail, which was a short, flat, kid-friendly walk through a fairytale forest filled with colorful flowers.

Getting down to the lake itself is not easy, especially if you are carrying kids, but you can get in the water for a swim at the end so it’s worth the hike.

Another epic hike in Crater Lake Park is at Wizard Island, the whimsically-named island in the middle of the lake. You need to hike down the Cleetwood trail and take a boat out to the island, then there is a trail to the summit. Taking a boat tour is the best way to appreciate the unique beauty of the lake and is a great activity with kids (although children must be two and over to participate).

The camping experience at Crater Lake is excellent. We went at a very busy time, yet the large sites and forest location meant we had plenty of privacy. Although the high-fire risk meant we couldn’t have an open camp fire, our kids had a wonderful time running around our spacious site, collecting pine cones and getting thoroughly filthy.
