Pinnacles National Park is both ancient and brand new: formed 23 million years ago by an erupting volcano, the 26,000-acre site is one of the newest national parks in the United States. With its stunning caves, spiky towers, cool canyons, and family-friendly camping, you’ll find plenty of top things to do with kids at Pinnacles National Park.

What to know about Pinnacles National Park

Eastern Entrance: 5000 East Entrance Road

Paicines, CA 95043

This is the main entrance, where you will find most of the trails, the visitor center, and the campground

Entry cost: $30 for a seven-day pass for a vehicle and its passengers, valid for both entrances

This park is cashless so bring your credit card!

Pinnacles National Park facts

Pinnacles National Park has two entrances—and there is no road through the park connecting the two.

The park is key to saving the endangered California Condor.

Pinnacles National Park was elevated into park status in 2013, but had been a National Monument since 1908.

Due to its proximity to the famous San Andreas Fault, the park is moving northward at a rate of 0.59 inches a year.

The park was formed by an erupting volcano 23 million years ago, and seismic activity has continued to shape the park to this day, creating the unique rock formations.

When to visit Pinnacles National Park

I have visited Pinnacles National Park in all seasons, and it is beautiful throughout the year. However, due to its inland location, it does get hot in the summer. Although my family survived a weekend camping with temperatures that never dipped below 100 degrees from 9 am until sunset (the outdoor pool available to campers helped a lot), I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it.

The weather during the spring and fall is most comfortable. If you can visit during the peak wildflower season between March and May, you’ll be treated to a kaleidoscope of color splashed across the landscape.

What to do in Pinnacles National Park with kids

If you’re based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Pinnacles National Park is a short 2.5-hour drive from San Francisco, perfect for a day trip or a weekend of camping. It’s important to mention there are two entrances: the west and the east.

The east entrance is closest to the Bay Area, while the west is closest to Monterey, gateway to the stunning stretch of coast known as Big Sur. There are no roads connecting the two, so you cannot drive through the park. You can access all of these trails from both entrances by foot, but if you are driving into the campground you must go through the east entrance.

Best trails for toddlers in Pinnacles National Park

The best trails for toddlers in Pinnacles National Park are also the best for everyone! These are my top recommendations. There aren’t a ton of paved trails in Pinnacles National Park, so I would recommend a toddler carrier for when the going gets tough.

Bear Gulch Cave Trail

This short trail is so fun and is easily one of the best things to do with kids at Pinnacles National Park! Park at the Moses Springs parking area (a tiny car park, that usually fills up before 9 am on a weekend) or at Bear Gulch. Take the Moses Spring Trail and follow the signs for the caves. It’s a short, and thanks to the oak trees, shady ascent. Stick to the path and pick your way through these talus caves, formed by ancient tumbled boulders.

Bring a headlamp or use your phone light as some sections get pretty dark. I bring the kids’ LED light beanies whenever we visit.

Once you have explored the caves, head back out the same way you came in, or continue up the steep set of stairs carved into the rock. At the top is a peaceful reservoir. Take the Rim Trail, which then connects to the High Peaks Trail, to return to the Moses Spring parking area.

Bench Trail

If you’re looking for a flat trail with plenty of shade, the Bench Trail is perfect. Starting from the campground, the refreshing sound of the creek accompanies you along the path, while Valley Oak trees provide a welcome canopy. After about a mile, you can switch to the Sycamore Trail for Bear Gulch, or continue to the Old Pinnacles trailhead.

Best trails for older kids and teens

If your kids can handle some (OK a lot) of uphill trudging, you can head into the heart of the park and get a close look at those otherworldly pinnacles. Bring plenty of water and if you are visiting during the summer months, plan to complete your hike by 10 am, as the temperatures can hit triple digits.

High Peaks Trail

This is one of those “it will be worth it for the view” hikes starting with a long, exposed climb. After catching your breath, admire the namesake granite rock formations, wildflowers cascading over the hillsides, and if you’re lucky, rare condors gliding overhead. Start from the Bear Gulch parking area and walk 1.7 miles along the Condor Gulch trail to the High Peaks trail. Follow the High Peaks trail through meadows, up rock steps in the “steep and narrow section”, and eventually down into shady woodland. This was a long walk at over seven miles, but a lot of fun.

Old Pinnacles Trail to Balconies Cave

The Balconies is the bigger brother to Bear Gulch Caves. The 5.3-mile there-and-back hike to the talus formation tracks the Chalone Creek, and sometimes involves crossing. If there has been a lot of recent rain, the caves may not be accessible, so check with a ranger first. While you could get away without a flashlight in Bear Gulch Caves, the Balconies are dark and spooky, so be sure to pack headlamps and waterproof shoes.

The Balconies are also accessible from the west entrance, and the trail from this side is shorter at 2.3 miles.

Pinnacles National Park camping

One of my favorite things to do with kids at Pinnacles National Park is Spend the night at the beautiful campsite, which includes access to an outdoor swimming pool during the summer. It’s a lot easier to motivate kids to hike in the morning with a promise of pool time and ice cream in the afternoon. Myself too, If I’m honest.

Book a tent, RV site or tent cabin through Recreation.gov. In addition to the camp shop and pool, there is a bathroom block with showers. Leashed dogs are allowed in the campground and on paved routes through the park.

All sites feature a picnic table and fire pit, with firewood available for sale at the camp shop.

The tent cabins are a great alternative to tent camping. The cabins sleep four and include a deck. You’ll need to bring your own bedding (you can rent anything you need at Sports Basement).

Where to stay in Pinnacles National Park

The only place to stay inside the park is at the campsite. If you are traveling from the Bay Area to the east entrance, Hollister is the nearest city with hotels. Stay at Casa de Fruta Cabins, a roadside fruit stand so popular it’s now a destination in itself.

The closest accommodation outside the park on the west side is at Inn at the Pinnacles or the Motel 8 in Soledad. You could also make this a day trip from Monterey, a beautiful coastal city located just over an hour away.

Getting around Pinnacles National Park

During busy times (public holidays, weekends in spring) the smaller parking lots by the trailheads fill early. There are usually spots available by the campground. This means that you may have a long walk just to get to the trailhead, so take this into account when you visit.

There used to be a shuttle bus that would take visitors to the trailheads but it wasn’t running the last time we came. The best way to ensure a spot is to camp in the park so you can hit the trail nice and early.

I’ve given plenty of kids camping gifts over the years, from stocking stuffers to big presents. They’re always a hit and get a lot of use. From camping gear to fun outdoorsy toys, here are my gift ideas for the adventurer kid.

Camping Gear For Kids

Binoculars

Spot birds, squirrels and other wildlife up close, or use them at night to see the moon, binoculars are a fun way to get kids interested in nature. This set is sturdy and kid-sized, perfect for their first pair.

Mini Microscope

Kids love finding interesting bugs on hikes or at the campsite and this pocket microscope lets them see critters up close.

Bug Catcher and Viewer

This bug catcher is perfect for bug-hunters and would be ideal for backyard adventures or on a trip.

Compass

If you are a family who regularly likes to hike, you’ll know how important trail safety is. Get kids interested in responsible trekking at an early age with this compass and take it on a trial run to a nearby park. For an extra challenge, look up your local orienteering club for a map and try a course.

Keep your kids safe with an emergency hiking whistle, so they can call for help if they accidentally stray from the trail.

Emergency whistle

LED Light Beanie

One of my kids’ favorite activities when camping is taking a night walk, when everything is just a little bit spooky and they get to use a flashlight.

These beanies with attached LED flashlights are the perfect gift for an outdoorsy child, keeping their heads toasty and their hands free. Best of all, the lights are easily recharged, no need for batteries.

Sleeping Bag for Kids

This REI sleeping bag is rated down to 25F and can be cinched at the bottom for smaller legs, leaving plenty of room for growth while keeping them warm at night.

Toddler’s Sleeping Bag

For 18-36 months old toddlers, you need a blanket that will keep them sunup without covering up their face as they move around at night. This quilted Baby DeeDee sleep nest is designed for outdoors, keeping your baby warm and safe all night. It’s also good as outerwear in a stroller during the winter.

Deuter Child Carrier

Whenever I pass a parent with a toddler on a trail miles from the nearest parking lot, they are always using this Deuter carrier. If you are into hiking and you don’t want to wait until your kid is old enough to walk some serious miles, this will keep you trekking comfortably.

Backpack

The Osprey Daylite is the ultimate day pack and now your kids can carry their own water with this smaller, kid’s version of the classic.

Smart Wool Toddler Socks

Socks are a classic Christmas gift, so make them warm and durable with Smart Wool.

Warm Toddler Snow Boots

Keep their tootsies warm all winter in these adorable Merrell kicks. When looking for toddler shoes, make sure the toe box is generous and the sole flexible. These fit the bill and actually look good too.

Rain Jacket

Another good hiking safety tip: have your kids wear bright jackets. Red and yellow are the most attention-grabbing colors. A good waterproof will keep out wind and rain, add a warm base layer if it’s chilly out.

Games For Toddlers

Sticks and stones make great playthings but these fun, portable games are guaranteed to keep kids entertained outdoors.

gofindit Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is a fun way to get kids to explore nature. This one is ideal for young kids as well as bigger siblings. Set a timer to make it more of a challenge.

WaterWow

Fill the included brush with water and watch the illustrations come to life. It’s very satisfying, makes no mess and is easy for small hands to grip. Once dry, WaterWow pictures go back to black and white and you can start again.

Crayola Coloring Books and Crayons

Classic coloring books and chunky crayons for the win.

Dump Truck

A campsite is basically a giant sandbox, so take a sturdy plastic truck like this one from Green Toys. All toys from this brand are made from recycled plastic and can be used in water, sand, dirt, left in the sun, dropped, whatever. They are impressively durable.

VTech Kiddizoom Action Cam

If your kid has asked for a Go Pro but you’re not sure kindergarten is the right time for a several hundred dollar piece of kit, this VTech camera fills the gap nicely.

We’ve got one and it’s small, easy to use and sturdy. It’s been underwater, captured on-the-go footage of bike rides and taken snaps of us all out and about. You will need a memory card but everything else is included in the kit.

A camera is a good camping toy for an eight-year-old, as you can encourage them to take pictures of treasures they find along the way, rather than take anything home.

Alternatively, this creator cam comes with a tripod, so your little creator can film themselves on adventures.

Lake Tahoe is beloved by Californians, who return year after year to spend lazy summer days splashing in the clear waters and hiking through fragrant pine forests.

It’s perfect for outdoorsy families who like to be on the water, especially for those with small children who might find the Northern Californian surf too strong (and shark-filled) for paddling.

Lake Tahoe is a year-round destination. The ski resorts are buzzing in the winter and early spring, while hiking and boating is popular in the summer and fall. I have focused on summer activities for this post.

What part of Lake Tahoe is best for families?

On the Californian side, the areas are roughly split into South, West and North. There is really no area that isn’t suitable for families.

I like the West Lake area: being in the middle, it is a short drive to anywhere and Tahoe City has a laid-back vibe with plenty of great places to eat.

Sunnyside Resort and Lodge is a great place to stay, and the lakeside restaurant is a locals’ favorite.

VRBO is another great place to find accommodation, as you can often find an entire home for the price of a hotel room. This Tahoe City cabin has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a real log fire and access to a private beach for an average of $200 a night.

If you want to stay close to some of the more famous beauty spots, South Lake is a better base but it is also a little busier with casinos and bars.

Check out The Landing Resort and Spa or Edgewood for a luxurious stay in a very convenient lakeside location.

North Lake Tahoe has some of the best beaches, with wide, sandy shores and stunning views over the lake. It is also fairly quiet.

The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino is ideal for families staying in this area. It has two heated outdoor pools, fire pits for roasting marshmallows and a private beach.

A short drive inland from the lake is Truckee, a vibrant mountain town with great restaurants and shops. Truckee is the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for a slightly less “touristy” Tahoe experience.

Although you won’t be right on the lake, this cute cabin near Truckee’s downtown is steps from the river.

What is there to do in Lake Tahoe for families?

Lake Tahoe is all about the outdoors: hiking, swimming, boating, cycling and after all that, enjoying a well-earned sunset cocktail on a restaurant deck.

I highly recommend spending half a day navigating the Truckee River on a raft: drifting down the river is the perfect way to stay cool on a hot day and there are a few rapids to keep things interesting.

Rent a raft from Truckee River Rafting, including life jackets and a ride back to Tahoe City, for a three-hour trip along the river. Under fives are free but under two-year-olds are too young for this activity.

Watch out for the geese – one of them bit our daughter!

For adventurous kids aged five and up, check out Tahoe Treetops Adventure Park, an outdoor ropes course where you can climb, swing and zipline your way through the forest. There are challenging courses for adults and easier ones for the whole family.

A fun lake activity is to hike down to Emerald Bay, rent a kayak and paddle out to Fannette Island not far from shore. Children can kayak but they must be over the age of three. More details on this hike are below.

Best Lake Tahoe hikes for families

Emerald Bay Sate Park

Stroller friendly: Yes, with a sturdy model
Distance: Two miles there and back
Trail start: Vikingsholm car park

Emerald Bay State Park, 12 miles north of South Lake Tahoe, is reached from the Vikingsholm car park ($10 parking fee) by a winding downhill trail. Once you are by the lake, you can explore Vikingsholm, an intriguing Scandinavian-inspired mansion, take a kayak to Fannette Island, or simply relax on the sandy beach.

One drawback to this area: it is very crowded. You will not get a car parking spot after 9 am during the summer. There is road parking but this too will be full after 10 am.

For families with small children, the one-mile hike to the beach is enough, especially if you are lugging all your swimming gear. The trail is wide and the incline is not too steep, so a rugged stroller is possible. A comfortable carrier might be easier, however, especially for the uphill return trip.

If your kids can handle a few miles of walking, the lakeside trail is flat and shady, perfect for all ages.

From Vikingsholm, follow the signs to Lower Eagle Falls, an easy trek through the forest to a waterfall. The trail continues, offering beautiful lake views as a reward.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds, pick up the Rubicon Trail from the beach and head away from Vikingsholm. Keep an eye out for the majestic Bald Eagles that circle overhead and make their nests in the pines.

Cascade Falls

Stroller friendly: No
Distance: Three miles
Trail start: Bayview campsite

Another great hike in this area can be found across the road from the Vikingsholm car park, at the Bayview camping ground, to Cascade Falls. Park at the entrance and trek through the campsite to the far side, where you will head over a ridge and immediately want to get out your camera for the view of the lake.

This out-and-back hike is rocky and narrow at times, so make sure you all have good shoes. Our kids managed this at four and six but I think it would have been do-able with a carrier for younger children.

The trail heads away from the lake up towards Cascade Falls, where the path opens up to a granite plateau. Take a picnic and check out the creek, where you can paddle in the shallow water.

Keep a close eye on the kids, as there are no barriers at any point. Stick to the lakeside trails if you are anxious about your kids’ safety on what is a fairly rugged mountain hike.

Dolder Nature Trail

Stroller friendly: Partially (to the beach)
Distance: 1.5 mile loop
Trail start: Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park

My other favorite family hike is in Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park. The large parking lot offers plenty of spaces, so there is no need to turn up early. The Dolder Nature Trail is a 1.5 mile loop that starts out paved and becomes sandy as you go deeper into the forest.

It is an easy, flat trail that begins and ends at the sandy beach, where you can take a cool dip after your walk. As you meander through the Sugar Pines that are the park’s namesake, look out for the logs and branches neatly piled – they are part of the controlled burns that take place here in an effort to mitigate the region’s devastating wildfires.

The park also holds Junior Ranger events here in the summer, so kids should look out for an opportunity to earn themselves a badge.

Balancing Rock Nature Trail

Stroller friendly: No
Distance: 0.5 mile loop
Trail start: D.L Bliss State Park

This is a sweet trail for kids, with a surprise at the end! Take the easy, half-mile loop located in D.L Bliss State Park, between South and West Lake Tahoe. There is some uphill and the trail is rocky, but it is not long and should be do-able with toddlers.

Round a corner and there it is – a cool geological phenomenon, or a dinosaur, depending on how you look at it. You can combine this walk with a trip to the beach, which is located at the bottom of the hill, through the campsite. There is parking at the end but I suggest you get there early in the summer (like 9 a.m. early) as there are limited spaces.

How to get to Lake Tahoe

From San Francisco International Airport, the drive is 200 miles, or around three hours and 20 minutes. If you can fly into Sacramento International Airport, the journey is more like two hours by car.

A good day pack should be light weight, sturdy, comfortable and feature plenty of pockets. Bonus points if it is waterproof!

I love Osprey as a brand because although their packs are expensive, they come with a a lifetime guarantee – Osprey will repair or replace your back pack free of charge, whether you bought it 20 years ago or yesterday. It’s a “buy once and done” philosophy I am on board with. The Osprey Daylite is my pick for short family hikes as it is small, lightweight and simple.

Hiking shoes

Depending on the age of your kids, you may only be attempting easy paths. But even on the simple trails, you might have to cross a small stream or climb over some rocks. You will need a sturdy, comfortable – and preferably waterproof – pair of shoes for everyone as sore feet will quickly spoil your trip.

Sports Basement or REI are great stores for outdoor equipment. As for brands, Keen is my favorite for the whole family. Their toddler shoes are very flexible and still look good after a year of continuous wear.

Water bottles

I have tried a lot of different bottles for my kids but I always go back to Green Sprouts. These bottles have been through the dishwasher hundreds of times and still don’t leak. The weakest point is the silicone straw but you can get a replacement pack for when they break (especially if you have a chewer).

For the adults, something that will keep your drink cool (or hot) is a bonus, and of course, should not leak all over your pack. YETI will keep your drinks cold (or hot) and stylish.

Snacks

Trail mix is good for a pick-me-up, as are cereal bars.

Waterproof jacket

The weather can change quickly and it is always good to be prepared. A light-weight waterproof can be layered for cooler weather or thrown on in the event of a sudden spring downpour. Columbia is a good, affordable brand, I especially like their Pardon My Trench coat, which looks as good in the big city as the great outdoors. Check out Columbia’s cute kid’s jacket and their men’s waterproof to outfit the whole family.

Baby carrier

If your child is three or under, you will find they get tired quickly on a hike and want to be carried. A back carrier or a stroller is essential for a National Park vacation with toddlers or babies. While you can find trails suitable for a stroller, it is a good idea to have a carrier so you are not limited to where you can explore.

For babies, I prefer a stretchy wrap, as I found these type more comfortable. Boba is the original and has thousands of great reviews on Amazon. For toddlers, a back carrier is the way to go. I still use a soft structured carrier like the LILLEBaby (actually it is a Connecta, which I love, if you’re reading this in the UK check them out!) but if you plan on doing a LOT of toddler carrying, you may be better investing in a frame carrier.

I have never actually tested any out so can’t recommend any personally – I will defer to Wirecutter who have a very thorough review.

Hats

It is essential to protect yourself from the sun. For kids I really like hats with chin straps like this one from iPlay. All my friends have this brand sun hat, we love them! For the adults, a wide-brimmed hat that can be crushed down for packing like this one from Siggi is perfect (and affordable).

Sunscreen

Kids often have sensitive skin and I have found mine do react to many brands. Banana Boat Kids Factor 50 spray is light, easily absorbed and has caused us no problems so we use this for the whole family when outdoors.

It’s also reef safe so you can take it to the beach as well as Yosemite.

Bug spray

I have always had the best results from bug sprays containing DEET, which is safe to use on children over two months old. Natural alternatives containing essential oils such as citronella are available but won’t be as effective.

I didn’t find mosquitoes too much of a problem during the day in Yosemite but if you are camping or planning to be outside at dusk it would be a good idea to have some on you.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has the following recommendations for parents using insect repellants on children:

Do not buy “two-in-one” repellant and sunscreen because sunscreen needs to be applied more frequently than repellant

Do not use products with oil of lemon eucalyptus (p-menthane-3,8-diol, or PMD) on under three-year-olds as it can irritate their eyes. Not to be confused with lemon eucalyptus oil, which is safer for children but not as effective

Do not use repellant under clothes, use on bare skin only

Do not spray onto the face directly, spray on your hands then apply to the face

Avoid multiple applications

Once indoors, wash it off with soap and water

It’s your call on whether to use a product with DEET or a spray with essential oils. While DEET has been used for years and has been proven to be safe and effective, it does smell pretty awful and there is a chance your child’s skin might have a reaction. I do use it at times when bugs are really a problem and anywhere ticks might be active. Make sure you read the ingredients of whatever you buy – for kids aged under 10, buy something with a 10% concentration of DEET.

I have a spray but it does get everywhere – wipes might be a better buy for children. If you use a spray, stand away from your kids and spray it into your hand, then rub it onto their exposed skin.

These wipes from Cutter are family-safe at 7% and if you prefer a natural alternative, try this Babyganics repellant instead.

First Aid kit

Kids inevitably get grazes, bruises and splinters when playing outdoors so have a simple first aid kit with you. I always take some antiseptic ointment, band aids, a cold pack, children’s Tylenol, children’s anti-histamines (plus adult versions) and tweezers in mine, which seems to cover most emergencies.

Camera

Smartphones take beautiful pictures now and I do use mine a lot! If you want to up your game though, I do think a DSLR is worth the cost and effort. The new generation of mirrorless cameras are a lot lighter if weight is off-putting and you don’t actually need a lot of extra equipment to take great photos – for example, I hardly ever use my tripod but with the in-built anti-vibration technology I can still take non-blurry photos with long exposure times.

Sony and Olympus make outstanding mirrorless cameras, so check out the Sony Alpha a6000 and the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mk II if you are looking for a sturdy, light-weight camera to capture those amazing views.

If you prefer to stick to the smartphone, invest in a selfie stick or tripod for group pictures and a set of lenses from Olloclip or Moment.

Pocket microscope

There are a lot of interesting things to pick up and look at out on a trail, so take this small but powerful LED microscope with you to get a closer look at the flowers, rocks and bugs you find. It’s also helpful if your child is keeping a travel journal and wants to draw pictures of the things they see on their trip.

National Park Annual Pass

You can buy your pass as you drive through the gates but if you want to buy in advance, you can order one online. Even if you don’t buy one in advance, it’s a good idea to check the different prices, options and discounts available so you can move through the entrance a bit quicker.

What to read

Anything by John Muir, of course! I really enjoyed “Anywhere that is wild” the naturalist’s account of his walk from San Francisco to Yosemite. His unapologetic enthusiasm for the natural beauty of California is inspiring and it is fun to follow in his footsteps, even if it is by car.

Romantic weekend getaway with kids? It can be done! Here are some ideas on how to celebrate your loved ones this year on Valentine’s Day.

Prices and availability accurate at time of publication, please check directly with the booking agents mentioned to get the latest information.

Poconos, Pennsylvania

Travelzoo has an offer for Woodloch Resort in the Poconos, a two-hour drive from New York City, with rooms available Sunday-Thursday (including the 14th, currently) for just $178 a night. This resort makes it into TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Most Family Friendly Hotels list, and is famous for its cozy atmosphere and activities. If you can upgrade to the one-bedroom suite for an extra $50, you can tuck the kids up at bedtime and retreat to the living area for some (almost) alone time.

Niagra Falls

Niagra Falls, one of the world’s most romantic spots, is absolutely spectacular in the winter when the falls freeze. Bring the kids too for some unforgettable family selfies and stay at Clifton Inn, a three-star hotel, for only $67 a night during the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. Suites are available and there are no extra fees for children under 17.

Las Vegas

Looking for somewhere a little warmer? The average temperatures in Las Vegas in February is 64F, and February is a quieter, more family-friendly time to visit. There is plenty of availability and casino hotel rooms are generous, meaning plenty of space to relax even with little ones in tow. While you may not think of Vegas as a family destination, the desert landscape is beautiful, the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam are nearby, and there are plenty of kid-friendly shows to enjoy.

According to expedia.com, there are rooms available at the centrally-located four-star Paris Las Vegas Resort and Casino for just $97 a night during the week of Valentine’s Day, a saving of over 50% to the usual rate.

Orlando

Florida is another great US winter sun destination and there are plenty of cheap hotel rooms available in February for families. The four-star Reunion by 1791 Vacation Experience has one, two and three-bedroom villas available from $103 a night mid-week in February.

Disneyland

OK, maybe not the traditionally romantic destination, but Disneyland, California will give your family plenty to smile about this Valentine’s Day. Especially as they are currently running a special offer on three-day Disney park tickets, which work out at just $70 a day, including one Magic Morning early admission with each ticket. Disney’s resort hotels are also running special offers, with up to 25% off premium rooms.

Book directly through Disney or check out Get Away Today, a travel agency with some of the best deals on Disney vacations available.

Do you think family trips can be romantic, or do you prefer to stay at home? Let us know in the comments!

Happy New Year everyone! Now all the madness of the holiday season is over, January is the perfect time to start planning this year’s family trips. Or at least dream of summer when it’s cold outside.

I asked three top travel bloggers to share the family destinations they are most excited to visit in 2019 and received great inspiration for new adventures for a new year.

Celebrating Life in Mexico

Raphael and Aslan Sinclair, A Life We Chose

The Sinclairs, a young Canadian family with a 6-year-old-son and a puppy, had a dream to travel the world. So they quit their jobs, sold everything and bought one-way tickets to Mexico. Their travel blog, A Life We Chose, is their inspiring story showing everyone can live out their dreams, no matter what!

“We’ve been in Mexico since September 11th, 2018. In every city or state we’ve visited there is one common theme: family comes first.

“The children here are very well looked after. Most families are very large and all the members pitch in to make sure a child’s birthday party is a blast. An average birthday party for a child will have a bouncy castle, food, games, clowns and of course, a piñata. The entire family attends in order to make sure the child feels special.

“On one occasion, our family was invited to a child’s birthday party by complete strangers. We attended, were welcomed with open arms, and treated like family.

“For our child, it’s a great lesson in gratitude and family values. Since many families here live below the poverty line, children are taught early to work and do their part for the family. In turn, elders are also looked after.

“Mexico is very safe for children. When we arrived in the small town of Santa Cruz de Miramar, we noticed groups of children playing without adult supervision in the streets.

“It was foreign for us because in Canada though people say it’s safe, no-one lets their little ones go play without supervision.

“We decided to give it a try and let our child play with the other kids without us hovering. The first day, he got hurt and a dozen kids came to our door to get us. Since then, Gryphin has gone out several times by himself and we’ve never had a problem though we’re still reluctant in bigger cities.

“According to friends I’ve talked to, crimes against children are nearly non-existant here. The reason being that people who commit crimes against children are not dealt with by police, they simply disappear. It might sound extreme but that’s the way it is.

“Here in Mexico, religious events like Christmas and Easter are very important since 80% of the population is Roman Catholic. They are celebrated much differently than in Canada. The celebrations usually go on for several days and are more family-focused than material-focused.

“There are several other religious holidays as well as national holidays like independence day.

“They don’t celebrate Halloween here! Instead, at the beginning of November, they celebrate Dia de Los Muertos (day of the dead). It is a time set aside to honor those who have passed on. Celebrations take place for a few days.

“No matter where we go, there are fun activities for kids. Whether it’s a circus, outdoor party, or something else, there’s always action! Some of the bigger cities like Guadalajara have things like arcades, trampoline parks and similar things.

“In the smaller villages, there’s usually outdoor places like rivers, beaches or trails to explore. It’s awesome because you can swim here year round. Is there really anything funner for kids than a family day at the beach?”

Off The Beaten Track In Altyn Arashan

Krasen, a travel blogger from Bulgaria, lives in China with his wife Ying-Ying and children. Krasen shares his adventures criss-crossing continents and favorite off-the-beaten-path destinations in his travel blog, Journey Beyond Horizon.

Krasen Jelyazkov, Journey Beyond Horizon

“I have always looked to some off the beaten path places, knowing that many of these places are incredibly beautiful, not crowded by over tourism and very natural. One of these places is located in Kyrgyzstan, a little known country in Central Asia, offering some of the most breathtaking mountain landscapes in the world. This place is Altyn Arashan, a valley in Tianshan mountains, with splendid coniferous forests, grasslands, alpine peaks and stunning views.

“Altyn Arashan is located near Karakol city. It can be reached by a 15km dirt road from the nearby village Ak-Suu. Walking on this road is easy, safe and you can meet many hikers from various countries. There are also big truck-buses, arranged by the local travel agencies for tourists. Finally, it reaches Altyn Arashan – a mountain resort at 2,450m altitude.

“This mountain resort is significant for one more thing – hot springs. There are many huts with pools, where the natural hot water flows and you can enjoy 40-50 minutes relaxing inside. And when you are not in the pools, you have a lot of opportunities for hiking, horse riding or just walking and resting on the grasslands and in the forest.

“The best time to visit Altyn Arashan is in summer, when the grassland is green and full of flowers. Other seasons are beautiful too, but summer is also easier to access this place. All this makes it a perfect, non-standard destination for young families with children.”

Mountains And Lakes In Switzerland

“Switzerland has been a family destination for Europeans for decades, both in the summer and winter. Its alluring mountains, lakes, little villages, and friendly locals have drawn tourists to Switzerland since Heidi was skipping through the Alps!

“There’s something to do there in every season, such as skiing in the winter, hiking in the spring and summer and exploring cozy towns in the fall. With kids, I recommend going in the summer to enjoy walking some of the trails around the Jungfrau region, swimming in the lakes around Interlaken, and taking the mountain trains up to the beautiful viewpoints of Schynige Platte and Kleine Scheidegg.

“Many families will rent out cabins or Airbnbs here, which gives a sense of being a real local in any number of small welcoming villages around the country. Restaurants are plentiful and varied, and even typical Swiss food could appease many picky eaters. Grab a pot of fondue to eat on the terrace (available year-round), some bread rolls and pastries for breakfast or a picnic by the lake, and cozy up in the evenings with dinner of potato mash and sausages.

“For families with children old enough to hike a couple of hours, there are amazing treks that go for many kilometers in the Interlaken area, such as from Schynige Platte to Faulhorn and Alpiglen, or the famous Eiger trail. For young kids, it’s a fun experience to ride the cable cars around the Alps, such as from Grindelwald to First!

“There are not many downsides to this beautiful country, EXCEPT the price tag. Being one of the wealthiest countries in Europe, accommodation, eating out, and especially transportation is expensive compared to American standards. If you’re cooking for yourself and limited long-distance train excursions however, it’s easy to visit Switzerland on any budget.”

San Francisco has a reputation for not being the most child-centric city to live in, with more dogs than children. As a visitor, however, its small size, mild weather and fun attractions actually make San Francisco with kids the perfect place to spend a day.

Morning

Start the day right with a Morning Bun and a coffee at <a href="https://www.tartinebakery.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Start the day right with a Morning Bun and a coffee at Tartine, 600 Guerrero Street, before it gets too crowded.

Baker Beach

If you have any energy left, you could check out Baker Beach, where you will find sand, fog, crashing waves and a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge. In San Francisco, the closer you get to the ocean, the colder and duller it gets, so you will need to layer up. From Union Square, take the 38R bus to Geary and 25th, then the 29. From the Ferry Building, take the number 1 bus. From Golden Gate Park, take 5R to Fulton and 25th, then the 29.

Getting around

Public transport in San Francisco consists of the Muni (trams, buses and cable cars) and the BART (underground train). You can buy a single ticket on board the Muni from the driver ($2.50, 4 and under free) but you must have the exact change. A day pass for the Muni costs $12 on the app MuniMobile, $15 on a Clipper card (including the $3 fee for the card) or $23 for a paper pass. These can be purchased at ticket kiosks, found at most of the major stops. If you are visiting for more than a day, check out CityPASS, a discount card you can buy that includes a 3-day Muni card plus entrance to two museums, an aquarium and a bay cruise.

Where to avoid

San Francisco is a fairly safe city but has some serious social issues including a large and visible homeless population, in part a victim of its own success as tech money pushes house prices beyond what many can afford. It’s often a shock to visitors unused to seeing such poverty amid such obvious wealth, and it seems worse in this city because many of those living on the streets do so right in the center, an area known as mid-market. So if you want to stay right in the center, in Union Square, you’re probably going to see SF’s unpretty side.

Public transport is the easiest way to get around but if you have a car, just DO NOT leave anything on display. Stick to parking garages, which are a little safer.

The neighborhood known as the Tenderloin is best avoided altogether, so don’t wander down Ellis or Eddy Streets from Union Square. Not to say this area is all bad but its certainly one of the sketchier areas here. Union Square itself is fine, home to some of the glitzier hotels, shops and restaurants. At Christmas time, this is where you will find the big tree and an ice rink.

The area around Mission Dolores is good for families, with Dolores Park, a ton of great restaurants and close to the downtown.

Some people also warn tourists away from the Mission neighborhood but personally this is one of my favorite places in the city, with an incredible array of restaurants, bars, cafes and interesting shops. If you stay on Valencia Street you will be fine.
