If you’re craving a break from school events, shopping, and general holiday season craziness—step away from the gift wrap and plan a Christmas in California escape. From snowy mountain ski resorts to sunny beaches, cute towns to Christmas markets, California has something for everyone. Here are a few ideas to get you started. Happy Holidays!

White Christmas in California

California snow seekers head to the mountains in winter for skiing, sledding, or snuggling by a log fire. Lake Tahoe is the most popular spot to hit the slopes, with 15 resorts ringing the famous lake, but there are plenty more destinations to pick from. Here are a few of my favorites.

Bear Valley

Arnold is a small mountain town just 2.5 hours away from the Bay Area, close enough for a day trip to the snow. At 4,000 feet elevation, Arnold is not guaranteed snow, but drive further up Highway 4 and the winter landscape will start to reveal itself. After 25 miles you will arrive at the Bear Valley Ski Resort. There are a couple of snow parks in the area for sledding, plus a groomed route for snowmobiles. I love this area, as it is quiet, easy to drive to, and inexpensive.

Stay at the Bear Valley Lodge for easy access to the slopes, or rent a cabin in Arnold to be closer to restaurants and shops.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

This is the perfect excuse to visit the nation’s Christmas Tree in King’s Canyon National Park. Every year since 1926, the nearby town of Sanger holds a Christmas service at General Grant Tree on the second Sunday of December. Winter is a beautiful time of year to visit the giant sequoias, when snow adds a touch of magic and the crowds are sparse.

Within the Sequoia National Park, Wuksachi Lodge is open until late December, offering modern rooms with in a traditional style. Up to three kids can stay in a deluxe room, and you can also bring your pet. You can also stay just outside the park at Montecito Sequoia Lodge, an all-inclusive lodge with fun activities like sledding, archery and s’mores by the fire. It’s closed for 2025 but will reopen for 2026.

Yosemite National Park at Christmas

If you have seen pictures of Yosemite in the snow, you’ll get it: this is the best and also least crowded season in California’s iconic National Park. The waterfalls are in full flow, and the snow-dusted landscape adds to the magic. There’s outdoor skating at Curry Village, skiing at Badger Pass and many of the trails are open.

Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite’s famous lodge, is perfect for a winter escape, and is often priced at a discount to the peak summer season. The hotel hosts the Bracebridge Dinner in December, an annual ticketed event featuring a seven-course banquet and Christmas-themed theater. You don’t need to be a guest of the hotel to join in the fun, but act fast, as seats sell out.

Big Bear Lake

Not to be confused with Bear Valley in northern California, Big Bear Lake is a small mountain town within a three-hour drive east of downtown Los Angeles. Snow is not guaranteed, but there are plenty of winter activities like an annual Christmas market (Christkindlemarkt, December 20, 2025), Santa visits and festive lights. Can’t decide between a boutique hotel and a cozy cabin? Have both at Nobel and Proper, an impeccably stylish property blending privacy with concierge service.

Christmas in Disneyland California

As you would imagine, Disneyland California goes hard at Christmas. Step through the gates and celebrate the season without having to do any of the stressful adult stuff. Obviously this is going to be a very commercialized (and expensive) option, but it’s also my favorite time to visit the parks: the weather is cooler, the decorations are beautiful, and there are some great food options. Will it be busy? If you’re going when school is out, absolutely. Still worth it.

My family have stayed on and off property, and both have their advantages. Staying at a Disney hotel—either the Grand Californian, Pixar Place or Disneyland Hotel—-grants you early entry to the park, so you have 30 minutes to rush to your chosen ride before the gates open to everyone else. However, Disney is changing that perk to one Lightning Lane entry during their stay as of January 5, 2026, so visit before then if you want to take advantage of the early opening.

The Sheraton Anaheim is less than half a mile away and offers a free shuttle to the parks, while the Travelodge Anaheim includes breakfast in the price. If you are visiting with young kids who cannot go on the big rides, there is no real reason to be up super early, so save your money for a character breakfast instead.

A Central Coast California Christmas

Forget the snow and enjoy the sunshine instead. While you will probably get some rain, December is still a beautiful time of year all along California’s central coast between San Franciso and Los Angeles. For a laid-back, barefoot-walks-on-the-beach vibe, I love Cambria, a small community near Hearst Castle. During December, don’t miss the Cambria Christmas Market with stalls, live music, and—of course—Santa. The Cambria Pines Lodge is a family-friendly hotel, with a cheery lounge and hot breakfast included.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is another endearing coastal Christmas destination. The cottages throughout the village are straight out of a fairytale, and you won’t miss the snow when you can have a white sand beach instead. Stay at Carmel Valley Ranch, a luxurious yet laid-back hotel where kids can meet the goats and chickens, and you can take a cocktail-making class.

With its Spanish-style architecture, palm-fringed beaches, and mountain backdrop, Santa Barbara is easy on the eye. But there is also plenty to do for families looking for a laid-back coastal Christmas break. December is the best time to see the gray whale migration, either from dry land at Shoreline Park or by taking a boat cruise from the harbor. Staying with an animal theme, the Santa Barbara Zoo is especially fun lit up for the holiday season during the Winter Lights event. Check into Hotel Santa Barbara in the heart of downtown to stay close to the action.

Christmas in the city

Stay in one of California’s great cities and enjoy the festive lights, performances, and traditions around town.

San Jose at Christmas

Silicon Valley’s biggest city goes all out for Christmas, hosting the long-running Christmas in the Park at Plaza de Chavez (daily 6-11pm Nov. 28 to Jan 1, free entry), an ice rink, and fairground rides at Winter Wonderland. Round out your trip with tickets to The Nutcracker at San Jose Dance Theater, and a walk through Willow Glen, a San Jose neighborhood with beautifully decorated trees. Stay in Hotel Valencia in Santana Row for walkable access to restaurants and shops.

Christmas in San Francisco

Union Square is the center of Christmas celebrations in San Francisco, with a giant Christmas tree and an outdoor skating rink. Nearby department store Neiman Marcus also boasts a huge tree, while Macy’s welcomes adorable (and adoptable) puppies and kittens to its festive window display.

Check out the Fairmont Hotel for its giant gingerbread house, and if you’re feeling fancy, stay for a Christmas-themed afternoon tea. The Great Dickens Christmas Fair is another San Francisco tradition, where the vast Cow Palace is transformed into the streets of Victorian London. San Franciscans will take any opportunity to dress in costume, so feel free to come as your favorite Dickensian character. As for accommodation, book a room at The Westin St. Francis if you want to stay in the heart of the action at Union Square.

Christmas in Los Angeles

You know Tinseltown is going to be a special place for the holiday season. With its mild winter climate, you can enjoy the Los Angeles festive spirit without feeling frostbite nipping at your toes. See Hogwarts Castle covered in snow and illuminated for the holidays at Universal Studios, and celebrate the season with your favorite characters at Disneyland in Anaheim. Stroll down Christmas Tree Lane (actually Santa Rosa Avenue) in Altadeana, and enjoy a century-old Christmas neighborhood tradition. Stay in Hyatt Centric Delfina Santa Monica if you want to be close to the beach, or The Hollywood Roosevelt if you want to stay close to all the Hollywood attractions.

Wonder hides around every corner in California’s mysterious desert national park of Joshua Tree. Trails wind around towering boulders sculpted into surprising shapes by the elements, through fields of the otherworldly Joshua Trees, and into secret gardens waiting to be discovered. This natural playground is perfect for adventurers and dreamers of all ages.

Less than an hour from Palm Springs and under three from Los Angeles, Joshua Tree National Park has plenty of easy hiking trails, ideal for families with young children. It’s the perfect spring break or Thanksgiving destination when the climate is cool enough to be enjoyable.

Although Joshua Tree National Park feels like the middle of nowhere, it’s actually close to plenty of other fun Southern California destinations, so it’s easy to visit as part of a longer trip. If you have time, check out nearby Palm Springs for a relaxing stay at a kid-friendly resort, the thriving art community of Joshua Tree, or live out your Wild West fantasies at Pioneertown.

Fun activities in Joshua Tree Park with a toddler

Even hike-hating kids will love these mostly flat trails, with plenty of interesting boulders to scramble up and around. Look out for interesting shapes, cool cacti and, if you’re lucky, the elusive desert bighorn sheep.

Hidden Valley

Sneak through a narrow gateway between boulders to discover a secret garden oasis. This flat, one-mile loop is lined with informative signs about the history and wildlife found in the area. We did this walk at sunset and felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. It’s a popular one with a small parking lot, so turn up before 9 am or after 5 pm for the best chance of snagging a spot.

Discovery Trail

This 0.8-mile trail was designed by local students, so you know it’s kid-approved. Stroll through sandy washes, pop through mini slot canyons, and look out for the mildly creepy Skull Rock.

Cholla Cactus Garden

Follow the boardwalk for 0.25 miles through this patch of teddy bear cholla cactus. This fluffy-looking (but not feeling!) plant thrives over this 10-acre area — and almost nowhere else. The cacti are especially beautiful at sunset and sunrise, when the thousands of plants glow in the golden light. Keep your toddler close though, this is definitely a look, but don’t touch, situation.

Skull Rock

This bizarre granite rock formation, created by wind and rain over thousands of years, is located on the main east-west park road. The 1.7-mile loop hike that starts from the popular spot is a bonus, and is flush with flowers in the spring.

Things to do in Joshua Tree Park with older kids

Barker Dam

Another short loop at 1.1 miles, this hike is a microcosm of human settlement in the desert. The path takes you to a dam built in 1900 by early ranchers and offers a look at rock art, thought to be created 2,000 years ago. The start of this trail involves scrambling over some boulders, but it’s an easy walk after the rocky start. On the way back, you’ll get a close look at the ethereal Joshua trees lining the trail.

Bouldering and rock climbing

Book an expert-led family rock climbing adventure for a memorable day out in Joshua Tree. All climbing gear, including for small children, is provided, and as this is a private group tour, you can go at your own pace.

Keys Ranch Tour

Book a tour of Keys Ranch if you’re visiting between October and May for an insight into life as a rancher in the California desert. These 90-minute tours sell out fast, so book as soon as you know your dates if you want to check out this early 20th-century homestead.

Junior Ranger book

Get your kids a Junior Ranger workbook on entry to the park, and on completion they will earn a badge from a ranger. These activity books are great for keeping kids entertained and informed as you make your way across the park.

Where to stay in Joshua Tree National Park with kids

If you want to stay inside the park, tent or trailer camping is the only option. However, it doesn’t take long to drive into the park if you’re not feeling that outdoorsy.

Camping in Joshua Tree National Park with kids

Five campsites in Joshua Tree National Park are available to reserve, while three are first come, first served. If you want water and flush toilets, make a reservation at Black Rock or Cottonwood. Make your reservations on the recreation.gov website. Camping allows you to see some of the wildlife that becomes more active at twilight, like the cute desert kangaroo rat. Plus the stargazing here is incredible.

If you want to camp but don’t have all the gear, try renting a van through Outdoorsy or a tent and sleeping bags at Sports Basement.

Staying outside Joshua Tree National Park

There are a lot of fun family accommodations just outside the park. Check out the instagram-famous Invisible House, or The Outlaw in Pioneertown, which was featured on Netflix show “World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals”.

Or stay in an iconic Airstream at Autocamp Joshua Tree for a comfortable camping experience, just outside the park’s entrance. If you’re looking for a chain hotel, the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Twenty Nine Palms is a ten-minute drive to Joshua Tree National Park, offers a free breakfast, and has a pool.

Family-friendly things to do outside Joshua Tree National Park

Take a 25-minute drive east to Pioneertown, the film set/vacation town established in 1946 by a group of Wild West movie enthusiasts. Although the popularity of Westerns has waned, this quirky outpost has clung on thanks to the likes of Pappy and Harriet’s, a legendary restaurant and live music venue that has hosted luminaries from Paul McCartney to Lizzo.

The Noah Purifoy Outdoor Museum is a free, open-air gallery in Joshua Tree. It’s a collection of sculptures created by the artist Noah Purifoy, made entirely from junked materials, and is the perfect contrast to the natural beauty of Joshua Tree National Park.

If you’re thinking a cocktail would go great with all those palm trees, the resort town of Palm Springs is located just under an hour’s drive from the southern entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. With plenty of outdoor dining, a cute zoo, and a fun aerial tramway, there is plenty to do for families on a spring or Thanksgiving break.

What to bring to Joshua Tree National Park

Prepare for the desert climate with hats, sunglasses, lip balm, and sunscreen during the day, and warm layers for the night when the temperature can drop sharply. If you’re planning on doing any longer hikes, take a map and a compass, plus hiking whistles for the kids so they can stay safe if they run out of sight.

When to go to Joshua Tree National Park

Due to the high temperatures in the summer time, this national park is best avoided June-September. The best times to visit are in the spring and fall, making Joshua Tree National Park the perfect spot for a spring, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or February break trip. Although the park doesn’t get a lot of rainfall, it does get cold in the wintertime. We visited during Thanksgiving week, and although the daytime temperatures were balmy, the nights were cold.

If you visit in October, you could catch the annual Night Sky Festival, a celebration of the skies with activities for all ages. On the other hand, April is ideal if you want to see the desert in bloom.

What your doctor wants you to know about melatonin supplements

The post Melatonin For Kids With Jet Lag: Is It Safe? appeared first on Tiny Trailblazers.

Jet lag with kids is miserable, so it is unsurprising that the popularity of melatonin, an over-the-counter remedy for sleep disorders including jet lag, has soared in recent years.

But is it safe, or effective? As a semi-regular flyer from the USA to Europe myself, I asked health professionals and parents what they thought about giving melatonin to kids with jet lag.

What is melatonin?

Melatonin is one of the hormones we produce that regulates our circadian cycle, which is how our body knows when it is time to sleep and wake up. Shift work, medical conditions, too much screen time late at night, and of course changing time zones, can mess up our body’s rhythms.

Melatonin does not make us go to sleep but it does send a signal to the body that it is time to prepare for sleep.

There have been studies suggesting melatonin supplements can be useful for people who cannot make enough themselves and are having difficulties getting to sleep.

In the US, melatonin is considered a supplement and is available over the counter in drug stores and groceries. It is the second most popular supplement for children, next to fish oil in terms of sales. The global market is set to double by the end of 2019, with the most sales coming from the US.

And a 2002 study showed that in nine out of 10 clinical trials, melatonin helped travelers overcome jet lag when crossing five or more time zones.

<img decoding="async" width="2048" height="1536" data-attachment-id="566" data-permalink="https://tinytrailblazers.com/melatonin-kids-jet-lag/62f2dc0b-2ba2-4ab1-8c87-539af336430d/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/tinytrailblazers.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/62F2DC0B-2BA2-4AB1-8C87-539AF336430D.jpeg?fit=2048%2C1536&ssl=1" data-orig-size="2048,1536" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.8","credit":"","camera":"iPhone X","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1551713432","copyright":"","focal_length":"4","iso":"50","shutter_speed":"0.0625","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="62F2DC0B-2BA2-4AB1-8C87-539AF336430D" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/tinytrailblazers.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/62F2DC0B-2BA2-4AB1-8C87-539AF336430D.jpeg?fit=870%2C653&ssl=1" loading="lazy" src="https://i1.wp.com/tinytrailblazers.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/62F2DC0B-2BA2-4AB1-8C87-539AF336430D.jpeg?fit=870%2C653&ssl=1" alt="Melatonin supplements on a drug store shelf.
Can you use melatonin for kids and toddlers with jet lag?

While there is quite a lot of research into adults using melatonin, there are fewer studies in children, with the exception of children with autism.

Yet pharmacy shelves are full of bottles promoting melatonin as a safe and natural sleep aid for children. In the US, melatonin is not regulated as a drug by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is easily available over the counter. In the EU, Canada and Australia melatonin is available on prescription only.

Does melatonin work for kids and toddlers with jet lag?

With little clinical research available, I asked frequent flying families who have used melatonin what they thought.

“I’m a huge fan,” said one parent. “The kids used a much smaller dose but it worked well.”

“It has been a game changer for our daughter, who always struggled to fall asleep. Now, she is asleep within minutes,” said another.

However, others I spoke to cautioned about the effects of melatonin.

“We tried it with our 19-month-old as a trial before our trip to Europe next month. We were one of the wonderful cases where it was an adverse reaction. The kid was WIRED and didn’t fall asleep until four.

“It was brutal but we are so glad we tried at home before testing it on our trip.”

Others reported restless leg and nightmares as a result of taking the supplement, while one parent who had taken it herself as an antidote to jet lag told me her periods had stopped for two months.

Is melatonin safe for kids?

I asked Mar De Carlo, founder of the International Maternity and Parenting Institute and children’s sleep coach what she thought about some of these side effects.

She said she was not surprised. “Melatonin is a hormone that is not regulated by the FDA. There has been research to suggest it can affect puberty, but we don’t have enough information about the long-term effects.”

Ms De Carlo explained, “When you start changing one thing in your body there is a domino effect. There are so many factors that affect sleep, like light, food and stress. Society likes to turn to a magic pill but nature doesn’t work that way.

“There are cases where you would need melatonin but the average child does not need melatonin. If you are going through travel time changes there are other things we can do to prepare.”

Dr Michael Breus, who is a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, agreed.

“I do not recommend melatonin in anyone under the age of 18,” he told me.

“Except in kids who are on the Autism Spectrum, in which case we look at 3-5 mg. Melatonin is a hormone and at higher doses it is a contraceptive. I can’t think of a reason why I would introduce a contraceptive into a young female developing body, without a gynecological concern.

“Most kids have plenty of melatonin in their systems, so supplement is simply not needed.

“I also COMPLETELY disagree about giving ‘sleep aids’ to kids. In some rare cases it may make sense (for very long flights) but you can actually do everything you need for a child, with light, exercise, caffeine and napping.”

I did find one sleep doctor who had reviewed the available research and felt melatonin is a safe supplement, when used appropriately, such as for children with autism, or short term, usually less than two weeks, when children are having short-term insomnia.

Sleep medicine specialist and American Academy of Sleep Medicine member Dr Shalini Paruthi said she would have no problem recommending melatonin for short-term use.

“The largest study [of melatonin in kids] followed 100 kids over three and a half years and that study did not report any major side effects. And they were pre-pubescent grade school kids. I think it can be safe,” she explained.

For parents who want to try giving kids melatonin, she recommends using it in conjunction with other jet-lag busting techniques.

“Westwards, they won’t need melatonin – just get them to bed a bit later every night,” she said.

Dr Paruthi said traveling eastwards is much harder and you can expect to take a day to adjust for every time zone you cross.

“If you do want to try it, try it at home first for three nights. Because for some kids it has the reverse effect, it makes them hyper,” Dr Paruthi warned.

“Give it to them an hour before bedtime and make sure they get bright light in the morning because that is the most important thing to reset the circadian system – more than the melatonin,” she added.

What is a safe melatonin dosage for kids?

Children only require small doses, Dr Paruthi said – parents should start at 1mg and move up to 2mg only if there are no ill-effects.

Dr Paruthi recommended following the instructions on the bottle for dosage, which also tell parents not to give melatonin to under three-year-olds. Jet lag is actually less of a problem for babies anyway, as they take regular naps throughout the day.

The 2002 study on jet lag and melatonin found the optimum dosage for adults was just 2mg and doses larger than 5mg did not make any difference.

However, even if you feel confident enough in the safety and efficacy of melatonin as a jet lag remedy in children, there is another problem.

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in 2017 found a worrying discrepancy between the melatonin content advertised and the actual dosage in the bottle in over-the-counter supplements.

The authors analyzed the contents of 31 different brands of over-the-counter melatonin supplements in Canada, before it was made available by prescription-only in that country.

Shockingly, they found melatonin content varied from -83% to +478% of the label. The authors found that the worst culprits were the chewable tablets, which are most likely to be used by children.

It contained almost 9mg of melatonin when it was supposed to contain 1.5mg, the authors found.

The study found there were huge variations even between the same brands, so you could be getting a completely different product each time you buy a bottle – even if you stick to the same brand.

With such massive differences, it is easy to see how someone could take 10 times the recommended dose accidentally.

Alternatives to melatonin for jet lag

All of the health professionals I spoke to agreed on one thing: the most important thing you can do to adjust to a new time zone is to get outdoors, as much as possible.

Here are the seven things you can do to beat jet lag:

1. Get outdoors

Sunshine is the most important factor in resetting your internal clock.

2. Eat at regular mealtimes

Even if you’re not particularly hungry, it will help your body understand it is lunchtime if you eat at noon. Avoid eating outside regular mealtimes.

3. Drink water

If you are hungry, try drinking water instead. Drink plenty of water during and after the flight, make sure everyone has a full water bottle before boarding.

4. Avoid “exciting” food

Caffeine, too much sugar or even spicy foods on the flight or the first day are not your friend. Keep meals easy to digest to help your body relax.

5. Time-shift before you travel

Help your children adjust to a new time zone by slowly changing their bedtime and wake up time a few days before you travel, giving them a head start on adjusting to the new schedule.

6. Don’t stress out

Expect some tiredness and embrace it. Don’t plan a full-on day of activities the second you land. Give yourself time to relax, unwind and recover from travel on that first day.

7. Naps are OK

Build nap times into your itinerary. Let kids take a nap in the afternoon and stay up later for an evening meal, rather than force them to stay awake all day and tantrum during the appetizers.

For more tips on stress-free travel with children, take a look at my posts on flying with a baby and flying with a toddler.

If you do want to try melatonin for yourself or your family, it wouldn’t hurt to speak to your doctor first. Here are some tips for giving melatonin to kids:

1.Try it at home first

2.Start at 1mg, for under 18-year-olds, try 2mg for adults

3.Take a tablet an hour before bed time

4.Stop if there are side-effects

5.Only use it for the first two or three nights and only eastwards

6.Combine melatonin with other jet-lag beating techniques

7.If you are taking ANY medication at all, consult a doctor before using as melatonin is known to interact with some drugs (birth control included).

After speaking to the health professionals, families who have tried it and especially after reading the Journal of Sleep Medicine paper, I have decided I will not be using melatonin on our next trip. I will be using all the tips they gave me on shifting my sleep schedule without supplements, however.

What are your thoughts on melatonin? Have you tried it yourself? Do you think it could be better controlled or are you happy to have it easily available? Let me know in the comments!

Booking an airplane seat for an infant under two years old shouldn’t be difficult… should it? Tiny Trailblazers investigates airline and booking website policies for infants to find out just how simple it is to buy a seat for your baby, and why you should do it.

Why would you buy a seat for an under-two-year-old?

Babies can get pretty heavy and wriggly on a long flight, making an extra seat a good move for everyone’s comfort. With their own seat, they have somewhere to sleep comfortably and do not have to be disturbed every time an adult gets up. More importantly, an infant can sit in a car seat or a CARES harness if they have their own seat, which is a lot safer than sitting in a lap. Turbulence can happen on any flight and can cause serious injury.

According to a spokesperson from the FAA, “The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) strongly urges you to secure your child in a CRS or device for the duration of your flight. It’s the smart and right thing to do so that everyone in your family arrives safely at your destination.”

If you do buy an airplane seat for your baby and they are under 40lb, it is highly recommended they sit in either a FAA-approved car sear or wear a CARES harness (the ONLY child harness approved by the FAA for flight). If they can’t sit upright, they won’t be allowed to sit in their own seat without an appropriate restraint.

Check out our post about bringing an infant car seat onto a flight.

While it should be as easy to buy a seat for your baby as it is for yourself, it doesn’t always work out that way, as Jessen, Seattle mom of two, found out recently.

Jessen said: “At first we didn’t want an infant seat but accidentally booked it and were like, ‘Hey! This is probably a great mistake!’ We also got a seat with a bassinet so we thought she could sit or be in the bassinet and her brother (4) could sit or lay down for the long flight in the extra seat.

“We thought we were buying through Kayak but when the confirm page came up (post putting in credit card info into kayak) it was Kiwi.com. We bought six months in advance because the seats were just over $900 each for a round-trip, Seattle to Rhodes. Way cheap!”

Unfortunately, when Jessen called Norwegian Airlines, the airline they had booked through, there was a problem.

“We called Norwegian to get the bassinet seat and they only saw three with a lap infant,” Jessen said.

After calling Kiwi, Jessen said the online travel agency agreed to look into the issue but it was taking time.

At this point, Tiny Trailblazers contacted Kiwi to find out what was going on with the booking.

A spokesperson for Kiwi said: “Kayak had facilitated the booking where four seats were ordered and paid for at full price. Through this booking, Kiwi.com had automatically processed three seats plus an infant to sit on the adults lap, with the goal to provide the best possible price for the customer.

“Kiwi.com has now adjusted the booking and has manually added the additional seat.”

Kiwi explained that a time zone difference may have delayed communication and added they get over a million flight search queries daily. Jessen said she was happy with the outcome and the Kiwi agents she spoke to were “really nice”.

As Jessen discovered, it is a good idea to call the airline you are flying with before getting to the airport to understand the policy on flying with an infant – and if you definitely have all the seats you booked! I checked the booking policies of the most popular US airlines and some online travel booking portals to give you an idea of what to expect when booking an airplane seat for an infant.

Kayak

Kayak gives customers the option to check either “Seat infant under two” or “lap infant under two”.

Expedia

Expedia has a drop down menu where you can select “lap infant” or “own seat” for your under-two-year-old.

Skyscanner

Skyscanner does not allow you to choose lap infant but as it is a price comparison site, you will be directed to the airline or travel agent to book the flight on selecting a flight. At this point, you can specify whether you want to travel with a lap infant. Skyscanner includes any discounts available to children in its algorithm, which is ideal for families looking for the cheapest option for the whole family.

American Airlines

American Airlines gives you the option of buying a seat for your infant on its website. However, you must ensure your bring your FAA-approved seat if your child cannot sit upright on their own. If you want to bring your under two on your lap, you won’t have to pay the full price but you will still have to pay taxes, and possibly a percentage of the adult fare.

The website does not give you the option of booking a “lap infant”. If you want to carry your baby on your lap, you have to call the American Airlines reservation line.

United Airlines

The United Airlines website gives travelers the option to book a ticket for a lap infant or for a seat for a child under two. On domestic flights, a lap infant is free (but you still have to let United know you are traveling with a baby).

On international flights, expect to pay 10% of the adult fare if they are on your lap and full fare if you book them their own seat.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest’s website only gives fliers the option to book as an adult (over two) or a senior online, so no choice of lap infant or seated infant.

If you are traveling domestically and want to carry your child on your lap, you need to book your own ticket then go to the Southwest ticket desk on the day of travel with your child’s birth certificate. Once an agent has verified your child’s age, they give you a Boarding Verification Document for your baby, which is the equivalent of a boarding pass. This is free of charge.

If you want to book your under two a seat and can bring your car seat or CARES harness, Southwest offer discounted infant fares. You will need to call the reservation line to take advantage of this offer on 1 (800) 435-9792 as these fares are not available through the website. Don’t forget your child’s birth certificate if you book an infant fare, as the ticket desk agent will need to see it at check-in.

If you are traveling internationally with a lap infant, you will need to pay the taxes and fees, either when you get to the airport or by calling the reservation line.

Hawaiian Airlines

When booking online, Hawaiian Airlines only offers the option of adult or child (2-11) so if you want to travel with your infant, you need to call the reservation line.

Lap infants fly free domestically, and pay 10% of the adult fare, plus taxes and fees, when flying internationally.

If you want to buy a seat for your infant, Hawaiian Airlines charges full adult fare for domestic flights but offers a discount of 75% for international flights for children under the age of two.

This special fare is not available online, you will need to call the reservations line to buy a ticket.

Delta

Delta only gives the option of booking as a “passenger” on their website. However, as you are paying full fare for a child under two in their own seat anyway, you can simply book their ticket online. If you want to take an under two as a lap infant, you will need to call Delta on 800-221-1212 after booking your seat so your child’s name can be added to the ticket.

There is no extra charge for flying domestically with a lap infant but expect to pay 10% of the adult fare plus taxes and fees if you are flying internationally. Again, you will need to call Delta to pay the fees or pay at the check-in counter.

Frontier Airlines

Frontier allow you to book a lap infant or children under 15 directly on its website. Lap infants fly free but Frontier recommends you bring their birth certificate in case their is any doubt about their age. Frontier has a “kids fly free” offer on some flights but you have to be part of their membership club, which has an annual fee of $59.

Spirit Airlines

The website for Spirit has the option to book seats for adults and for children but there is no lap infant option, so if you want to carry your under-two-year-old, call the reservation line when booking. Domestically, lap infants are free – Spirit recommends bringing their birth certificate to the airport for check-in as proof they are not older than 24 months – while taxes and fees apply to international flights.

Alaska Air

There is an option to include a lap infant on Alaska Air’s website but not book a seat for an under-two-year-old, so you can call the reservation line in this case. Lap infants travel free in the US but have to pay fees and taxes internationally. According to Alaska Air, there may also be a charge based on a percentage of the adult fare but it is not clear what this would be.

If your child has a fear of flying but you still want – or need – to travel with them, what steps can you take to help them?

Why are children afraid of flying?

According to Dr Martin Seif, ADAA member who ran a Fear of Flying program and has counseled thousands of adults for their flight anxieties, young children are not afraid of flying as such, because they have very little experience of air travel, but they may have other worries.

“There are lots of young children, where there are elements of flying they don’t like, like fear of crowds, or not having their familiar things with them. They might have a social shyness, or social anxiety,” he said.

“The fear of nausea and vomiting, which can be a fear for ages of five to ten, can be a real issue for kids. If they are just concerned about the flight, there are lots of things you can do: mostly, reassurance.

“There are anti-nausea medications mild enough for children you can give, or ginger-based remedies, even a placebo can help.”

Dr Seif added if a fear of vomiting goes beyond flying and is an everyday problem, with your child refusing to go to school or get in a car, it could be the start of an anxiety disorder and should be evaluated by a doctor.

Flying triggers a lot of different anxieties and older children with a fear of heights, germs or confined spaces might find flying difficult, Dr Seif said.

However, the greatest fear people have about flying may not be what you expect.

“People who are afraid of flying, their greatest fear is not crashing or turbulence. It is having a panic attack and not being able to do anything because they are stuck on a plane.

“And that is the primary fear people have of flying. It is a fear of fear. Triggers could be reading about terrorism or a crash, but it doesn’t stick as a phobia until the age of ten.”

Address your own fear of flying

Children look to their parents for reassurance and an anxious parent may pass their fears onto their children.

Dr Seif said: “Many adults are afraid of flying and children between five and ten will pick up on that.

“If parents have real concerns about flying themselves, I always suggest they find a lighthearted comfortable way to say, ‘we don’t like flying and we have some silly fears.’ Because children tend to notice them.

“If you’re showing anxiety, your children will. So appear as calm as possible. You can say, ‘look, mom and dad have a silly thing about flying’, so it becomes a joke, not a boogeyman in their head.”

An estimated one in six adults in the US has a fear of flying, so there are plenty of resources available to help.

Look into a course, either online from fearofflying.com, at an airport – Milwaukee’s Mitchell International offers help from an aviation psychologist – or from an airline.

British Airways runs a Flying With Confidence course, with classes held in New York City, as well as other places around the world.

Virgin Atlantic offers a course, which includes a short flight – although you will have to get to the UK first for this one.

There are also self-help books available to help you understand and overcome your travel anxieties, including Dr Seif’s Overcoming Unwanted Intrusive Thoughts, Flying Without Fear by Duane Brown and Captain Tom Bunn’s Soar: The Breakthrough Treatment For Fear Of Flying

Take your child for an airport tour

If their fear of flying is actually a fear of the unfamiliar, your child might be reassured with a trip to the airport. San Francisco International Airport offers a self-guided tour aimed at children, which includes a trip to its aviation museum. Take a look at your local airport’s website to see if they offer something similar and take the family for a day out at the airport.

Go to an aviation museum

If you have an aviation museum nearby, this is a great place to familiarize your children with air travel. A trip to a museum gives your child the opportunity to ask as many questions as they like and there are usually enthusiastic docents about to help answer them. Many museums, such as the Hiller Aviation Museum in the San Francisco Bay Area, have airplane cockpits children can climb into and explore.

Talk to your child about their fear of flying

Even if you cannot get to an airport or air museum, you can discuss your child’s fears. Asking them exactly what is bothering them and listening to their fears will help reassure them that it’s OK to be worried and more importantly, that you care about their feelings.

Encourage them to ask questions and continue to offer reassurance, talking about your own positive experiences and about the destination. You can read books together like Nope! A Tale Of First Flight.

Prepare and get to the airport early

Seattle Children’s Hospital offers some tips for a stress-free trip on the day. “For air travel, avoid rushing and the stress it causes.

“Allow plenty of time to get through the lines at check-in and security. Be sure you don’t have more liquids than what’s allowed. (Before your trip, check online for the current rules on liquids, including baby formula and breast milk.)

“After you clear security, you can buy more water near your gate. Let your kids walk as much as possible before boarding. Insist that everyone use the restroom, and give babies a fresh diaper. Take advantage of early boarding for families with children. If your child weighs less than 40 pounds, they should be in an FAA-approved safety seat that’s right for their age, weight and height.”

Check out my post for more tips on how to fly with a toddler without stress and how to travel with an infant car seat.

Let the air crew help you

A spokesperson for United Airlines said that while the flight attendants job is to ensure the safety of passengers on board their aircraft, they have plenty of experience in dealing with nervous children (and their parents).

One customer thanked staff for their help on a flight with her young kids. “During my flight home from Cancun to Chicago, the flight crew went far above and beyond in their service and hospitality,” she told United.

“I would like to pay a special complement to Myra. Myra showed [my three-year-old] what all the galley equipment did, showed him how the light work and gave him some extra snacks.

“Myra and Danielle then gave him a warm cookie and a set of United wings. I asked what his favorite part of the vacation and he said that it was the airplane. Myra went above and beyond and made that flight special for my children and for that I am thankful.”

Bribery and distraction

Dr Seif said parents can focus on reassuring their children before the flight, and distracting them with fun activities once on board.

“The closer you are to the present they less anxious you are. Society is focused on the future – ‘what if’ thoughts.

“Anything that keeps a child closer to the present will help. So that’s why you want to to take a lot of things that look good, feel good or sound good to keep them connected to the present, whether that is candy, coloring books or screens to keep them occupied and busy during the flight.”

Make sure you bring plenty of snacks, drinks, toys and other entertainment for the flight. If you normally limit screen time, the promise of their own tablet will likely help them look forward to a flight.

Buy some new toys to whip out if things get difficult but don’t forget to take a familiar toy, blanket or book to help them feel comforted in unfamiliar surroundings. Take a look at my post Best Travel Gear For Toddlers for suggestions on how to make kids comfortable and happy on a flight.

Romantic weekend getaway with kids? It can be done! Here are some ideas on how to celebrate your loved ones this year on Valentine’s Day.

Prices and availability accurate at time of publication, please check directly with the booking agents mentioned to get the latest information.

Poconos, Pennsylvania

Travelzoo has an offer for Woodloch Resort in the Poconos, a two-hour drive from New York City, with rooms available Sunday-Thursday (including the 14th, currently) for just $178 a night. This resort makes it into TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Most Family Friendly Hotels list, and is famous for its cozy atmosphere and activities. If you can upgrade to the one-bedroom suite for an extra $50, you can tuck the kids up at bedtime and retreat to the living area for some (almost) alone time.

Niagra Falls

Niagra Falls, one of the world’s most romantic spots, is absolutely spectacular in the winter when the falls freeze. Bring the kids too for some unforgettable family selfies and stay at Clifton Inn, a three-star hotel, for only $67 a night during the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. Suites are available and there are no extra fees for children under 17.

Las Vegas

Looking for somewhere a little warmer? The average temperatures in Las Vegas in February is 64F, and February is a quieter, more family-friendly time to visit. There is plenty of availability and casino hotel rooms are generous, meaning plenty of space to relax even with little ones in tow. While you may not think of Vegas as a family destination, the desert landscape is beautiful, the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam are nearby, and there are plenty of kid-friendly shows to enjoy.

According to expedia.com, there are rooms available at the centrally-located four-star Paris Las Vegas Resort and Casino for just $97 a night during the week of Valentine’s Day, a saving of over 50% to the usual rate.

Orlando

Florida is another great US winter sun destination and there are plenty of cheap hotel rooms available in February for families. The four-star Reunion by 1791 Vacation Experience has one, two and three-bedroom villas available from $103 a night mid-week in February.

Disneyland

OK, maybe not the traditionally romantic destination, but Disneyland, California will give your family plenty to smile about this Valentine’s Day. Especially as they are currently running a special offer on three-day Disney park tickets, which work out at just $70 a day, including one Magic Morning early admission with each ticket. Disney’s resort hotels are also running special offers, with up to 25% off premium rooms.

Book directly through Disney or check out Get Away Today, a travel agency with some of the best deals on Disney vacations available.

Do you think family trips can be romantic, or do you prefer to stay at home? Let us know in the comments!

This article may contain affiliate links, which means we may receive a commission from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Read my full disclosure here.

I’m going to take an in-depth look into why travel insurance is probably a good idea if you are headed overseas and some questions to ask your chosen insurer before you buy a policy.

Why buy travel insurance?

This article will mostly look at the benefits of travel insurance for trips outside of the US as that is where the costliest risks for travelers lie. If you only take domestic trips you should still consider a policy but you probably won’t need the health coverage part as your health insurer will cover you and your family nationwide.

Or skip to the short version

Health

This is the most important aspect of cover, as healthcare is crazy expensive and illness and injury tend to strike at the most inconvenient times. Especially when we are doing unfamiliar things in unfamiliar places.

If you are resident in the US and have private healthcare, you are probably covered worldwide for emergency treatment but little else. The US State Department suggests calling your insurer and asking a few questions: what medical coverage will I receive outside the US?

Do you cover emergency evacuation? What about repatriation? Or an emergency related to an ongoing medical condition?

Trip cancellation and delay

Most insurance policies include cover for the cost of your trip in case you have to cancel, or if the airline/accommodation/tour operator goes bankrupt.

You will also get coverage if the airline loses or damages your luggage. As vacations are luxuries, you might feel that you can take the hit. If you are taking expensive sporting equipment with you that you can’t easily replace, or this is a trip of a lifetime you won’t be able to afford again, it’s definitely worth getting a policy.

Car rental coverage

If you are renting a car at your destination, find out the country’s rules for insurance before you go. In some places, third party coverage is included in the price, while others consider this a separate cost and will not let you rent the car until they see proof of coverage. This is usually an expensive policy purchased at the desk. Buying a policy ahead of time, either as part of your travel insurance or as a separate policy will save you money overall.

When should I buy travel insurance?

Most insurers allow you to buy a policy up to the day before travel. However, it makes more sense to buy one as soon as you have booked your trip, as you will then be covered for cancellation immediately.

Where should I get a policy from?

You probably already have home, health or car insurance policies – ask your insurer if they offer travel insurance and if there is a multi-policy discount available.

Consider an annual policy if you make a few trips – you will then be covered for all your last minute trips as well as your bigger annual vacation.

What about the fine print?

Most travel horror stories involve people who didn’t have a travel insurance policy but there are a few who got caught out by “fine print”. Be aware that you are covered for the dates you give your insurer and if you change your flights home to stay a little longer you are no longer covered.

“Pre-existing conditions” is a common issue. If you have a medical condition be sure to ask your insurer whether this will invalidate your policy, or what would happen if you have an emergency related to this condition while overseas.

“Extreme sports” is another. If you intend to do anything exciting, like skiing or scuba diving, check out this section of your policy. Many activities are not covered at all and require extra coverage.

If you bought your flights, accommodation or car hire using frequent flyer miles, any losses will probably not be covered.

If you cancel due to psychological disorders, this is often not covered.

If you are concerned about any of these things, ask for a policy that includes “cancel for any reason” coverage. It can often be added as a supplement. Buy this one with plenty of time before your trip as there is generally a 10-15 day gap before purchase and coverage start.

The short version

If you…

…are going outside the US, yes you do need travel insurance and you should buy it as soon as you have booked your tickets

…want to scuba dive, ski or do anything else exciting you need “extreme sports” coverage

…have a pre-existing medical condition, ask your insurer about the implications

…are spending a fortune and want peace of mind regarding cancellation, get “cancel for any reason” coverage

…are hiring a car don’t forget rental insurance

Don’t forget to take the details with you – another benefit to travel insurance is a 24-hour helpline for round-the-clock travel advice.

If you are not going overseas, check some of your existing policies and with your credit card provider – you may already be covered for some expenses without needing an additional travel insurance policy.

If your baby has become mobile, you’ve got a whole new set of challenges. When you have just learned to walk, sitting for long periods of time is entirely unacceptable. Flying with a toddler is not the same as flying with a baby but totally do-able once you adjust your expectations.

Booking the flight

Children are free until the age of two as they can travel on your lap but if they are approaching their second birthday you may want to consider buying a seat for them anyway. A toddler can get pretty heavy on your lap and they will have space to lie down for a sleep on a seat. Either way, consider choosing an aisle seat as your little explorer will want to take a lot of walks up and down the airplane. A night flight may be your friend here as a sleeping toddler is easier to deal with. Find a non-stop flight if you can, as layovers are no fun for a cranky toddler.

Passport

If you’re traveling overseas, you will need a passport for your toddler. Domestic airlines do not usually require any identification although it is a good idea to check when booking your ticket. Passports are reasonably straightforward but you need plenty of time, so if you need one make sure to book the appointment as soon as you know you will be traveling.

What to pack in your carry on

Anti-bacterial gel and wipes as you just know she is going to touch everything. Plenty of snacks and water – pouches are great as you don’t need a spoon and she can feed herself.

Diapers – if you’re in the middle of potty training, get some pull-ups. It won’t set them back but it will make the flight less stressful.

Think about taking something your child can suck on during take-off and landing to help with ear pain, like a drink or some gummy candies.

Toys – a few small favorites and a few new ones to whip out when you can sense an approaching meltdown. A coloring book and crayons is a classic, as is a lift-the-flap story book. Finger puppets you use to tell a story are engaging. Shape sorters are also fun. Toddlers love getting into things, so wrap up your gifts in paper for extra entertainment. Try not to take anything valuable, or small, as it’s pretty difficult to retrieve things from between the seats. Or messy. Definitely nothing messy.

There are some great ideas here for entertaining toddlers on a plane, including free printables.

Depending on their age, you might be able to persuade them to play a few games on a tablet. Sago make some entertaining ones and there are plenty of drawing apps available for free. Don’t forget to download them in plenty of time as there may not be any Wi-Fi at the airport and test them in advance, as some apps require an internet connection to work.

Spare clothes, including layers as the temperatures on flights can vary quite a lot. Make sure you have a blanket and something you can use as a pillow.

Getting through security

If you have a child under two, the TSA advises you to ask to join the priority line through security, which will help speed things up a bit. You are also allowed to take more than the standard 100ml of liquids if you want to take water, milk or juice on the flight. Children under 12 do not have to take off their shoes. When going through the metal detector, you can carry your child, or just accompany her if she wants to walk.

If you’re taking a car seat or stroller to the gate to gate check, these will need to go on the belt to be X-rayed. Consider buying a bag to protect your car seat as they can get banged up during the loading and unloading process.

On board

Once on board, expect your toddler to want to explore this exciting new world. It should be fine to walk up and down a few times once the seatbelt sign is off. Hopefully they will soon be pretty tired and ready for a nap and you can settle down peacefully for a while. We also drop all rules on screen time during a flight and make sure we downloaded plenty of shows and games.

Flights aren’t all bad. Just don’t forget the snacks and the passport and you’ll be fine.

This article may contain affiliate links, which means we may receive a commission from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Read my full disclosure here.

My preferred option was to spend the entire first year of my newborn’s life snuggled up in bed but life had other plans. Turns out it is possible to travel with a baby and is in many ways, preferable to flying with a toddler. Plus under two’s don’t need their own seat so they fly free, yay. Here are all my tips and a checklist for traveling with a baby.

How Old Do Babies Have To Be To Fly?

My husband and I emigrated to California so when we had our firstborn, we knew it was only a matter of time before we would have to cross the Atlantic to the UK. We took our son at four months and have been flying ever since.

First of all, is there a minimum age you can take a baby on a flight? No, essentially. If you want to book your baby their own seat, so you can fly with a car seat and have somewhere to put them during the flight, you will need to book them a ticket. You can even do this before they are born, if you need to travel immediately, just call the airline and ask for their advice.

If you are flying with them as a lap infant, you can simply add them onto your booking for free (domestic) or for around 10% of the ticket price (international flight).

We waited until our newborn had been given the second dose of vaccines according to the CDC’s recommended vaccination schedule but this is a matter of preference.

If you are flying internationally, you will need a passport for your baby and this will take time. You can apply as soon as you have a birth certificate and can get an appointment at a post office.

Do Babies Fly For Free?

Sort of! Most airlines allow under two-year-olds to fly for free as a “lap baby” on a domestic flight, which means they do not get their own seat and have to sit on your lap for the duration of the flight. On international flights, you will have to pay the taxes, which cost around 10% of the ticket.

Ask For A Bassinet

Book international flights well in advance of your travel date and ask for a bassinet, also known as a SkyCot, CarryCot or TravelCot. This is a basket attached to the seat in front of yours designed to carry a baby safely on board long-haul flights. There are only a few places on the airplane where the bassinet can be attached, so you need to book early to secure one of these coveted seats.

The reason you want one is you face the whole trip with a baby on your lap and it is nice to get to the bathroom occasionally. Airlines have height and weight restrictions on bassinets so check these before booking.

If you don’t have a bassinet, consider a window seat so you don’t have to get up to let out a fellow passenger a second after you got your baby to sleep.

Fly Nonstop

It’s usually cheaper to include a layover on international flights. This is one area where you should spend the extra and book non-stop if possible. Getting a baby on and off a plane is not fun and this is something we have learned the hard way. Also, consider a night flight, as a sleeping baby is much easier to deal with.

Car Seats And Strollers

If you are traveling with a car seat or stroller, you can check these in free of charge with your luggage. However, this essential gear is annoyingly fragile. Ideally you would have a lightweight umbrella stroller you can put in an overhead locker but these are best suited to toddlers, not infants.

The safest option is to gate check the seat and stroller. This means taking both through the airport but you will probably be grateful to have the stroller at least. By taking your car seat and stroller right up to the gate, they are less likely to be damaged or lost and you get them back as soon as you step off the plane at the other end.

Make sure all loose straps are secured and I recommend you buy a bag for extra protection. If your car seat is damaged en route, lodge your complaint with the airline before you leave the airport for your best chance of getting some money back.

Check out my post Flying With An Infant Car Seat for more tips.

Getting Through Security

Families with children under two get priority going through security. The restricted liquids rule is also waived so you can take through a “reasonable amount” of formula, breastmilk, water, and juice, although this will all have to be scanned. Baby food in cans or jars is also permitted. If you are taking your car seat and stroller to the gate, these will need to be scanned too. Children under 12 do not have to take their shoes off. Babies and infants have to be carried in arms through the metal detector. If your baby is in a sling this is usually OK too.

The TSA also recommends you double check your bag before leaving for the airport. You don’t want to be that parent who causes a security alert because their child slipped in their favorite toy gun.

Passport

Baby’s first passport! I highly recommend sorting this out in plenty of time. Depending on where you are and what time of year you’re applying, this could take a couple of weeks or a few months. But the process is simple. Check out travel.state.gov for the instructions then make an appointment at a post office near you. Appointments vary drastically between locations so check a few for the most convenient time.

Don’t forget a passport photo, birth certificate and proof of citizenship (if your baby was born outside the US), plus your own ID. Both parents need to attend the appointment; if one can’t make it, a permission form or evidence that you are the sole parent will be required. When you receive the passport, don’t forget to sign it and add an emergency contact number.

Infant Health

It’s recommended by the CDC that you wait until your baby has had their first set of immunizations before traveling. However, it may be possible to receive these vaccinations on an accelerated schedule. Talk to your pediatrician about your travel plans. In some ways, babies are easier to protect from illness as they are only eating and drinking the breastmilk or formula you provide, plus they are not constantly touching every grubby surface like a toddler does.

Check and check again you have all the supplies you need to feed your baby. Diapers, and wipes, changing mat obviously, and spare clothes are necessary carry-on requirements. Pacifiers if they use them. A muslin blanket makes a good extra layer if it gets cold.

A sling is a good thing to have on you but the flight crew won’t let you use it while in the air as they are not approved for flying. Some car seats are, however; so if you want to buy a ticket for your baby, bring your FAA approved car seat on board and ask the flight crew for assistance in strapping it in. If your baby is used to napping in her seat, this may make for a more relaxing flight for you.

Take a whole pack on cheap onesies that you can consider disposable in case of poo-splosions or spit-ups. You really don’t want to stick a soiled outfit back into your bag. Take a wet bag or zip lock for the less catastrophic outfit changes.

If you can, try to feed your baby on take-off and landing, as it helps with their ears.

What if They Cry The Whole Time?

At four months, I was worried about my son annoying everyone on a flight with his crying but plenty of cuddles and the roar of the engines proved to be very comforting, so he slept most of the way. My second was, let’s say, more of a handful but even she was pretty calm on a five-hour flight at six months. You know your baby best; if he is generally happy and calm being constantly held, you’ll be OK. Even if he does scream, most people are pretty understanding. Don’t stress too much!

The post First Flight: Checklist For Traveling With A Baby appeared first on Tiny Trailblazers.
